Pretty sure C86 was our driver and we broke down just getting onto the ‘62 and ended up in the boozer across the field from motorway whilst we waited for the 4th emergency service. paulhanley
Bolton 1 Halifax 1 from the 1986/7 FA Cup. The second of the three games after the 1-1 draw at the Shay that I posted the other day. Tony Caldwell scores for us and the Halifax scorer is none other than Phil Brown, 18 months before he signed for us for £17,000. This is a proper old school cup tie, end to end, goalmouth thrills and spills, played on a muddy pitch and in torrential rain. The fact that we struggled to deal with a Fourth Division side was surely a portent of our relegation fate to come.
Duck Egg
A couple of good reminders there; The stupid rule that a 25 yard strike into the top corner could be disallowed because some player was in an offside position on the other side of the pitch (see also Cowdrill v Swindon a few years later) What an exciting player Mark Gavin was when he was in full flow

Absolute screamer by Thommo there. Petty rule!
wakey
seeing the Halifax clip reminded me ... When Phil Neal first came in and he'd play balls down the line to absolutely nobody, me and my owd man used to say "he's on a different wavelength to the rest of them". Took a while to realise just how absolute gash he was for us as a player, hard to fathom given his pedigree. That clip of him looking like the non-footballer drafted into the pub side to make up the numbers brought it all back. Not said it before, but great stuff with these clips Paul. I'm going to try to get as many of them up on You Tube as possible before the new season starts. Neal had been a good player for Liverpool. As with Asa Hartford, by the time he'd signed for us his legs were going.

Perhaps playing a few balls to "no one" was him saying move into space you cunt! 😀
paulhanley
The last of the three FA Cup First Round games we played against Halifax in 1986/7. This is the second replay, a Monday night game when we finally saw the Shaymen off. After two 1-1 draws we won 1-3 away. Some of the camerawork in this isn't great and there's no commentary. Dave was obviously having a night off!

paulhanley
A 1-1 draw at a night game in the latter part of the 1985/6 season. Dave Sutton equalises for Bolton after Brentford had taken a first half lead.
emus wig
Don’t think he played in that game but remember seeing Stan Bowles play for Brentford against us in the 80s . Proper player he was even at the end of his playing days . Just looked on wiki says he had 5 games for Bury in 1970 .

paulhanley
After nearly 8 years Bolton finally won a game in London. It was November 1986 and we collected an unexpected Division 3 away win at Griffin Park, Brentford. The previous victory in the capital had been a top-flight 1-3 win at Loftus Road, QPR in December 1978. The London jinx had become a real "thing" among Bolton followers and the media. It was good to put it to rest.

Unbelievable really when you consider the dismal run of results away from home and in London - over a prolonged period. And when we were only getting 4-5000 for home games! I went to that match, can't see myself on the vid. That was my second trip down to London in a week having gone to an Arsenal v Man City League cup tie in the midweek (it was school half term and going to any football match was exciting at that age) Bolton won, City got beat, it was a great half term

You can say "I was there when the London jinx was broken". Not that anyone born after about 1980 will have much idea what you're on about! Other than the Freight Rover Final it was my first Bolton game in London.I haven't seen us win at Brentford since and can remember a very bad 0-3 there in the early 90s, The other away win in 86/87 was funnily enough in the spring half term week up at Darlington, would love to see that one if you have it,

If memory serves it was played in very snowy conditions - and the picture on the video isn't of the highest quality. I've only seen us at Brentford once and that was the season before last! Did see Burnley play there in a cup game in the late 90s.
