Nugent also got an England call in the Championship and was younger, look how well he did for Pompey. It really is a risk to sign him, given the signing fee and wages he's supposedly demanding now.

Of the two, I'd have Bothroyd; just for the physical game........but if we signed both that'd be us done signing strikers. We need more goals than a 4 of Davies, Klasnic, Nugent and Bothroyd would give us. We'd struggle to get 20 goals out of them in open play, if past form at this level is anything to go by.

Your guessing at a lot of stuff here.

I'm almost certain you will not have a clue how much his signing on fee would be, and I will put my own guess out there and say that it was more to do with the fact that he didn't want to play another year of Championship football other than demanding ridiculous wages (and even if it was wages I'm pretty sure we could afford more than a financially struggling Championship team).

Also I don't think that we would sign both of them, and even if we did I'm not sure that they would be the only 2 strikers that we got in, if someone else came up for the right price then I don't see why OC would turn it them down just because we had already got those 2.

Like I said A LOT of if's.

Naturally. It's speculative. But that highlighted bit isn't a guess. If we keep Klas and Davies (no sign we won't) and sign two strikers, do you think we'll be in the market for a 5th?

I can only go of what's being reported regarding Bothroyd, like anyone else. But it doesn't matter if he gets 15 thousand or 30 thousand a week, not if we sign him and Nugent; that'll still be it for us signing stikers, because it makes no sense to go with 5 up front over a season.

The average wage at this level is now 25k a week, and Bothroyd has just been given an England call-up he'll be in a position to demand at least that. So to say there is no risk in the deal is plainly false. It's also a risk if he is brought in with the need for him to score(as he would have to if the other signing was Nugent) and he didn't. So there is both financial and footballing risk involved. None of that seems to be over-the-top as a claim.

Fair points, I suppose the reason I have for needing more than 4 strikers is because Klasnic can't play 90 minutes, and I'm hoping that Davies will be used as an impact player next season, as for me he's not good enough anymore, therefore not giving us 4 proper options.

As for the financial side of it, I suppose it is all guesswork but IMO the fact that we wouldn't have to pay a fee for him would mean that even if he did want wages that were slightly high then it wouldn't matter as much, and I can;t see him coming up from the championship and demanding ridiculous wages.

It's all opinion, but for me Bothroyd on a free alongside a couple others would be a good signing for a club of our size and finances.

I think that if we have any 5th option in attack, it'll be Ward covering the strikers and wings.

We just can't afford to pay 5 first team wages; nor could a club of our size keep 5 experienced strikers happy.

And now plantpot! That?ll teach me to suggest transfer targets you disagree with AND slightly underestimate their value.

Hope I don?t send you apoplectic with these further suggestions of players of the standard I think we should be targeting: Nedem Onuoha, Michael Mancienne, Zoltan Gera.

are you diddles in disguise? cry about being picked on.

remember, you started it

You're right, we're aiming too low, trying to get the best from the relegated teams. Arsenal will be letting a few go, how about Arshavin, Nasri & Djourou?

and im the one suggesting we get players out of our reach?

you think Brum will sell Johnson for the same amount they paid for him from the Championship and sell Gardner for less than they paid for him

aye, alreet then

its possible re: Johnson, he'd be on a free next season (assuming he hasn't extended in his time there) and they no doubt need to make up for the drop

we got Muamba for the same they paid for him too

he's the only one I'd take from them though

Big difference.

Johnson has no doubt exceeded their expectations. Muamba on the other hand...

To sell him for what they paid for him would indicate they couldn't have rated him that highly. Could well be wrong though.

I know one Birmingham fan and at the time we signed him I asked him his views on him. He said words to the effect of,"He's a great tackler and gets up and down the pitch... but he can't pass for toffee and his shooting is awful too." Sound familiar?

He was rated by them, and by the U21 set-up, as a future England player. Stuart Pierce had him down as the best young defensive midfielder in the country.

I never said they didn't rate him. I just said they couldn't have rated him that highly if they were willing to sell him for ?5m (only ?1m more than they'd paid for him).

... and I do remember Pearce singing Maumba's praises after a tournament game.

Unfortunately I've not seen Muamba put in too many performances that could justify the tag given to him by Pearce - although, admittedly that could be because of the role he is expected to perform for us rather than the one he does for the U-21s.

I've seen Muamba have plenty of great games for us. I've seen him break up attacks almost all game vs Utd. He's man-marked Gerrard out of a game. He's completely dominated players like Barton and Modric. He's also had games where he's looked worse than useless. But he's a 23 year old, playing a role that players grow into. People are saying how great Parker is. A few years ago, when he was available, no Bolton fan wanted to touch him with a barge pole. He's matured into a role and his experience is showing. Different player in a different role, but no defensive midfield player is the finished article at 23. His passing needs to improve, but he doesn't lose the ball half as much as people claim. He can't shoot, but that's not his job. If we're relying on Muamba for goals, then something is very wrong. He drives forward well with the ball and having more movement upfront might see more come of it.

I still say Muamba has the potential to be a good player. But he can't spray passes and shoot from 30 yards, so clearly he's shit. The fact that he has one of the highest tackle success rates doesn't seem to matter, nor does the fact he makes shed-loads of tackles. And for a player who always gives it away, his average pass completion over a season has been near 80% in the past (though when he's off form it can drop as low as 60%).

He's not a super star.....but he gets vastly more abuse than he's due.

I only know 1 brum fan (season ticket holder mind) and he couldnt believe we payed ?4m for him, he said the same about him as many of us have good at breaking up play but beyond that is very poor.

If we are playing 4 4 2 then IMO we need 2 guys in the middle who can both break up play and move the ball up the pitch and get it to a white shirt.

Muamber is best in a 5 man midfield with 2 other guys in the centre so he can win ball and pass short to someone who can do a bit more.

as is Faye

Just me thinking he's worth a punt on a free? We're not exactly inundated with defenders or centre mids.

Aye, probably just you :)

Muamba is very decent as long as he has other 'midfielders' around him, not 2 wingers and a lightweight makeshift partner

Our formation makes his job very difficult at the best of times as more often than not we're up against 3 in the middle

If he wasn't so constantly fucked from the work generated from the above I believe his passing would be better

I may be giving him a tad too much credit but i like him and I'm sticking with it :)

i'll give you one, julie

not sure faye would be flavour of the month at the club after jumping ship last time

and he hardly fits the 'has to be young, up and coming and fit, or called blake' profile

Claude Mak?lel?, Nicky Butt, Mascherano, Flamani, Gattuso

Not saying Fabrice is anywhere near the class of the above, however none of the above were viewed as great passers or goal scores. They had a job to do and let other players get on with that nonesense. Just always seemed to me people expect a little to much from FB.

Strange really that he has not excelled in the current formation under Coyle as a deep lying defensive midfielder is something we seem to be crying out for to sit and assist the centre halfs once our fullbacks and all the midfield are left up from when we lose the ball.

If I was manager I would fine Fabrice everytime he passed the ball more than 5 yards and crossed the half way line :pardon:
