If it's only a bit dead, this will happen fairly quickly, depends upon what you are prepared to put up with really. If the lawn is really that bad, it won't be fully repaired before then- so perhaps that could be your guide. A regime of preparation and overseed may be in order. Thunder storms in West Midlands have gone through Cheshire and Birkenhead and seem to be dying out now.
