MalcolmW Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 Has Konta broken into the top 10 yet? - I've always been pretty impressed when I've watched her, and thought that she could challenge for honours, especially as Williams is now hopefully on the wain. Also, as an aside, what's happened with Laura Robson, is she finished now? Yes (at 10 before this latest tournament). LR says she lost confidence just before she stepped on the court yesterday, recalling that after her last match there she was out for 18 months. 37 unforced errors in 116 points indicates how poorly she played in a first round qualifier. mickbrown Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 There is an impressive list of those who have refused the offer of an honour. I'd love to be offered one and tell them where to stick it because it's a load of old shit. Quote
Exiled Girl Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 Also, as an aside, what's happened with Laura Robson, is she finished now? I think Konta is up to 9 after this tournament. She got to the semis of the Aus Open last year so has a lot of points to defend, and has about the worst draw she could have got. Robson has said she'll be seeing a psychologist, one who worked with Murray in the past. Who knows, it might work. It has worked very well for Konta who's achieved a lot more than I thought she would, after sorting her head out. Quote
Casino Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 Listening to the comms earlier, kofta is defending about 700 points But she's already pushing 500 this year Quote
Exiled Girl Posted January 13, 2017 Posted January 13, 2017 True. She just needs to keep the points going. Quote
bolty58 Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 You won't need me to tell you that the Aussies have claimed the Konta. "Sydney born Konta wins" scream the headlines. Factual but misleading. Quote
Sweep Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 You won't need me to tell you that the Aussies have claimed the Konta. "Sydney born Konta wins" scream the headlines. Factual but misleading. She's not really British though is she, Hungarian parents, born in Sydney. I think she only moved to England when she wss about 15 years old, and isn't it only in the last few years that she's actually become a British citizen? Still, while she's winning we may as well claim her. She can go back to being what she really is when she turns shit Quote
bolty58 Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 (edited) Not really bothered what she really is. More the eagerness of Aussies to adopt winners - a couple of previous examples being Phar Lap and Crowded House. Still, I did have fun when I first arrived regarding AC/DC. "Three Scots and a Yank" used to have the Aussies hopping. Raging indignance. Edited January 14, 2017 by bolty58 Quote

gonzo Posted January 14, 2017 Author Posted January 14, 2017 Laura Robson was born in Melbourne. JSL She's totally shite so doesn't qualify in being British anyway. Quote
jayjayoghani Posted January 14, 2017 Posted January 14, 2017 I know Konta's background isn't that convincing in terms of Britness. However if you hear her speak and see her mannerisms, she does appear very British, to me anyway. Certainly more convincing than say Lennox Lewis or Greg Rusedski. Isn't it getting a very tiresome discussion this though. With freer movement of people this is going to get more common. People's nationalities are becoming more plural. Plus I'd give Konta one too. Gonk Posted January 15, 2017 Posted January 15, 2017 She's totally shite so doesn't qualify in being British anyway. its not that long ago it was a pre-requisite for a brirish player Quote
Casino Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 its not that long ago it was a pre-requisite for a brirish player but it didnt matter, so long as they smiled murray wins overnight and evans (hopefully) about to follow him in the next few minutes Quote

Sweep Posted January 16, 2017 Posted January 16, 2017 For what it's worth, if we're talking tennis, I'd like to do rude things to Dominika Cibulkova Quote
Alf Hartigan Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Think I tipped Dan Evans a few years ago to be a top player, still might make it if his first round performance against Cilic is anything to go by. We're getting good at this tennis malarkey. Quote
Alf Hartigan Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Evans into last 16 now, straight sets win over another seed Quote
Guest Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Evans into last 16 now, straight sets win over another seed To meet and beat Murray int semis? Quote
Alf Hartigan Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 To meet and beat Murray int semis? not likely to be fair, one not likely to get to semis, two even more unlikely to beat Murray. he can be far better than his current ranking suggests though Quote
Guest Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 Murray struggling He's going out and Evans is winning Quote
jturner Posted January 22, 2017 Posted January 22, 2017 He's going out and Evans is winning Must be a sickener for Murray. For all his achievements in other tournaments he's only actually won one Grand Slam since 2013 Quote
