The Australian side qualified for the 1974 world cup finals.  The captain of that side wrote his autobiography and wanted to give it a title that reflected the hostility many Aussies had towards those who played football in their country.

Sheila's, Wogs and Poofters is still in print and available!

Sounds ace :D

There was always a story going around down here that Johnny Warren had Hungarian heritage and was inspired to love football by the exploits of the likes of Puskas and Hidegkuti.

Supposedly anglicised his name because the 'wog' thing was pretty full on. When I moved from Wollongong to Perth it was a big shock to me (and my Italian heritage other half) that the Eye Ties were not referred to as 'wogs' over her but as 'dings'. Something to do with many Italian migrants becoming bus conductors and always pressing the bell. All the other Med and Balkan types were still referred to as wogs however - still the case amongst the R M Williams wearing rednecks.

Certainly the case with Les Murray (for others, he was a very famous presenter in Oz who always a proponent of "the world game". Things better now but back in the day, he had his work cut out)

Born in Hungary and changed his name.

Cheers mate! The brain obviously going - you are correct! That fucking Monteith's Crushed Apple Cider! We had the walking football end of year do last night and I must have over indulged! That's my excuse anyway. Mixing up Murray and Warren? Tsk!

All local-ish games helps too, Forest probably the most impressive there

Charlton have landed the dream  League Cup tie for 3rd Div clubs, 45% of the takings might  be worth a million quid to them

without even knowing/seeing the draw, let me guess...have they got your beloved reds?

Exeter would have gone completely out of business had they not drawn the rags in FA cup 3rd round and took them to replay. Cleared over 1.5M

As great as that was for Exeter, and Charlton, its almost unfair that some random picking a ball out of a hat is potentially the difference between survival and going bust.  If Macc or Bury had the same luck, they may still be league clubs. I've always felt a bigger share of cup takings should go in a pool to be distributed fairly, whilst still giving the competing club a decent pay day.

They don’t call it the luck of the draw for nowt. But tbf getting to that stage of the cup is money earned to say the least (and the prize money for each round isn’t to be sniffed at for the smaller clubs)

Yep, they’ve done well and worked hard to get there.

I take your point but I think the onus has to be on the clubs to run themselves sustainably.

If the difference between survival and going bust is a good cup run something's gone very wrong at that club.

I see the Jocks played today

Have we ever played Christmas Eve?

Don't ever recall it happening in my time

I agree completely clubs should be run within their means (but then dodgy owners come in and all bets are off, but that's a different discussion).  But aside from drastic situations, an eg of a more routine one is if us and Charlton are 2nd and 3rd in the table, both running their clubs well and going head to head for promotion, on similar budgets.  Dion Dublin pulls a ball out and they get Man U away in 3rd round of cup, and he gives us Millwall away.  Charlton spend their million on 2 new strikers from the championship and we can't compete any more.  Just the principle of getting a huge season changing slice of luck without working for it doesn't sit comfortable, I'm probably just jealous as it never seems to happen to us.

We played Burnley on 23rd in 00/01

My recollection of this game was me and mates parking up, then joining an escort of Bolton g fans to the ground, but the bloke behind me thought I was Burnley and gave me a couple of kicks

That and Colin Hendry baring his arse to Burnley fans at full time
