State of this match report.

"We're not going to make it, are we? People, I mean.'

:D

In the denseness of gun smoke brave Newport's mini-revival came to a dramatic halt as a quartet of missiles floored them in a brutal Peaky Blinders assault at Rodney Parade.

Cannons roared, as vitriol flared with six players booked - County's spirited display derailed as a brace off Ryan Finnigan bullets, other daggers from the flashing blades of Daniel Kanu and Rico Browne spilling County blood.

Kai Whitmore's rocket response and a goal from Ged Garner bit back, but too many chinks in the County rear-guard allowed the Sadlers to show just why they dwell at the summit of League Two.

This was a crazy encounter with five strikes in the opening half, but County remain rock bottom of the Football League and seeking a first home points maximum in almost eight months - despite grabbing a lead here and winning four out of their last five matches coming into this crunch.

Newport were unaltered for the third successive game, which meant skipper Lee Jenkins had shrugged off a cut eye sustained in last Saturday's Emirates FA Cup triumph over Gillingham to take his place at the heart of defence - the Exiles continuing to favour a diamond midfield blueprint, with playmaker Kai Whitmore feeding Courtney Baker-Richardson and Garner at the cutting edge.

The visitors, residing adjacently to Birmingham's Spaghetti Junction,, made one alteration to their line-up that demolished National Conference Eastleigh 3-0 in the FA Cup first round last weekend - centre linkman Finnigan slotting in for Brandon Comley.

the table-topping Sadlers, led by towering ex-Bristol City centre back Aden Flint, boast the tightest rear guard in the section, yet their attack was showing it's teeth only 28 seconds after kick off.

Aaron Presley lashed a glorious chance over the bar after Courtney Clarke had ghosted inside from the left, before Whitmore rose highest to nod a volley from the aforementioned Clarke off the line with Exile keeper Jordan Wright stranded.

Former Grimsby man Wright then beat back an angled Kanu blast as swaggering Walsall moved into top gear. Yet the stunned Sadlers trailed to a sharp Newport counter in the 17th minute.

Garner raced free on the right and squared for Whitmore to send a 20-yard right-foot screamer past Myles Roberts. It was the ex-Haverfordwest man's third goal of the campaign.

Yet, that flash of brilliance had been eclipsed by the ruthless  Midlanders with three bullets piercing brave County's armour inside 20 astonishing minutes.

Kanu had levelled for the Sadlers less than 60 seconds later - this the prelude to rampaging Finnigan bagging a brace on 19 and 37 minutes leaving the Exiles shellshocked.

Newport were rocking, but their new-found resilience showed as they sprang from the canvas, to roar back seven minutes on, Garner spinning onto Baker-Richardson's cushioned header, the ex-Barrow striker squeezing his left-footer past stretching Roberts' right hand.

It was spell-binding stuff with the excellent Sammy Braybrooke guilefully prompting centrally. Newport defensive frailty was fatally exposed again just seven minutes into the restart, though - Browne bundling home Evan Weir's out-swinging left-side corner in a congested box.

Tempers flared before and after the hour - referee Ben Atkinson showing yellow to County's Braybrooke, Habeeb Ogunneye, Ben Lloyd and Whitmore - Walsall's Connor Barrett and Flint also cautioned in separate incidents as the fires crackled..

Liverpool fans were saying it will take time for new squad to gel with all the new players, like they've had an overhaul or something

8 that started yesterday were there last season

And trying to either close down a player in possession or doing your best to block a shot, when you're a defender, isn't anything to do with gelling.

and further to that, they were saying (this was on all 606), Slot won the title last year with Klopps side, but now this is his side - again, most of them are Klopp's players

they weren't moaning when they won the first 5 games

they've just gone shit, it happens

their new signings have all been terrible though so far

How do you shrug off a cut eye by the way? 😂

They had him, medical and everything then the bottom fell out of Palace's deal for his replacement and it was off.

Good.

He'll end up signing for a big club instead.

I agree, but to be fair whilst they weren't moaning at that stage, there were a lot of comments about their results flattering them.  I know it doesn't matter if you win 5-0 or with a 95th minute penalty, but when top teams keep leaving it late, it suggests all is not well.  In 11 of their first 12 league and cup games (incl Community Shield) they either lost (5) or scored a winner from the 83rd minute onwards (6).  2-1 v Everton was the only "routine" win.  Great excitement at the time but it was only a matter of time before it went the other way eg late defeats to Palace, Chelsea and Man U

I suspect back then it was "yeah, we're not great, we're winning, but just wait until our new signings gel"

now it's "what do you expect when we have had so many changes, it takes time to gel"

We're back!

Newport will seek to deaden the pangs of League Two concern in a quest to script Vertu Trophy progress when Exeter City call this Tuesday at Rodney Parade [19.00] writes Tony Rees.

Put simply, victory over the Grecian, who 28 rungs above County on the Football League ladder, would propel the Port into the last 32 of a competition that has gold at the end of a cup rainbow that ends at Wembley Stadium next April.

Holders Peterborough were thought to have banked £1.25m-plus in beating Birmingham at London HA9 0WS seven months ago, their bloated deposit included competition prize money, match tickets, merchandising and sponsorship.

A quartet of clubs are tethered together in the Group A Southern Section, Newport bolted with Arsenal U-21s, Cardiff City and Exeter by virtue of County's 1-0 away win over the neighbouring Bluebirds in October.

Manager David Hughes, who could restore New Zealand keeper Nik Tzanev to his starting line-up, would hope to have left-back Tom Davies and, possibly,  linkman Michael Spellman available, holds the Vertu Trophy in great esteem.

The Welshman is urging his men to chalk up their fifth win in seven matches - this after stumbling at home 4-2 to League Two leaders last Saturday, leaving County rock bottom of their section.

Said Hughes, " Re-discovering momentum is the aim. The Vertu Trophy is a realistic opportunity for clubs outside the Premier League and Championship to take their supporters to Wembley and give them a good day out and some great memories.

"We have set ourselves up for progression thanks to a terrific and deserved 1-0 win at Cardiff last month. It was a satisfying result and performance at the Cardiff City Stadium and we look to replicate that display against another club one section higher than us in the Football League.

"Exeter will be a real test, make no mistake. We will need to work hard and maintain concentration levels and eliminate unforced errors against very useful opponents to prevail."

Hughes, a fine centre back in his playing days, might re-shuffle a rear guard that shipped four to League Two leaders Walsall at home in a crazy game of six goals last Saturday.

County might hand a full debut to Akin Odimayo, a versatile defender signed as a free agent recently - having been released by Northampton.

But Newport will need to spike the guns of a Grecian side who edged out  young Arsenal 4-3  at St James' Park in last month - the Gunners' rookies breached by a brace from Northern Ireland international Josh Magennis, Jack Aitchinson and ex-Reading hit man Jayden Wareham who has fired three goals in as many games.

Farce at Preston Park.

Ref calls the game off at 7 and fans start making their way home, but then another pitch inspection is arranged for 7.30 and the game is back on.

Even Sky had started to pack up and not sure if the match was on telly, but as it’s Trashmere and Evatts lot then fcuk em.

The only way that could be made better is if Wigan fans were somehow inconvenienced by it all too.

Just caught some of L1 goals on Sky Sports just then.

Stockports defending was all over the show and even worse was Cardiff's.

Never noticed them playing with such a highline at our gaff. All 3 goal no defenders to be seen the shit cunts.

In the last couple of games not only have we got ourselves right into the mix, but the opposition look less impregnable.  I'd assumed Cardiff would be the team to beat, and they might still be, but they looked one paced here, and the Blackpool defeat didn't do anything to suggest it was a one off.

Only scored 6 goals away and 4 were in injury time, Salech's got 3 of them all after 95 minutes!

Its currently there for the taking and that's not to underestimate any team because every game is a test.  Especially at those little grounds where it can look like a different sport at times compared to playing at home (or Huddersfield).
