Casino Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 2 non league teams in the fifth round for the first time ever Unless uncle malcolm knows different Quote
birch-chorley Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 (edited) Think we may see more of it as well The set ups at some of these national league teams are great, a lot of them if not all are full time as well I think Might as well call it League 3 and bring it into the league with 3 going up into L2 each season Edited January 29, 2017 by birch-chorley Quote
DirtySanchez Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 Read that the manager of Sutton is loaded He paid for the artifical pitch to be laid, gave the club an interest free loan and does the job for free Fair play to the bloke Quote
MalcolmW Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 2 non league teams in the fifth round for the first time ever Unless uncle malcolm knows different Well it's obviously untrue, since the cup is older than the league! It hasn't happened since the league expanded to 3 divisions in 1920-21 and 4 the following season. The current format of the cup, with byes into the third round, began in 1925-26. It hasn't happened since then, but there were 2 in the last 16 in 1919-20 (Cardiff City and Plymouth Argyle). Last time there were 3 non-league clubs in the last 8 was 1909-10 (Coventry City, QPR and Swindon Town). When there was only one division it happened twice: 1890-91 (Nottingham Forest, Stoke and The Wednesday), and 1888-89 (Birmingham St George, Chatham and The Wednesday). Quote

Take your point about the cup being older than the league, but was there a 5th round? I really dunno why I'm pursuing this Quote

birch-chorley Posted January 29, 2017 Posted January 29, 2017 I thought The Wednesday were some public school boy team from London Or was that The Wanderers? Quote

I really dunno why I'm pursuing this In the early years there were no qualifying rounds, so there was a fifth, and even sixth round, if the number of entries required it. The qualifying rounds started at the same time as the league, and the regional entries determined whether teams played in the qualifying rounds. Quote
