Why should he be forced to wear a poppy to show his respect for those who died in the World Wars? Or any wars for that matter. Jon Snow doesn't wear one on Channel 4 News either. I think he is a touch misguided. The poppy is a sign of respect to the men & women who died. It is not a symbol of support of political decision making. Go to the war graves in france and you will see graves from both sides all treated with the utmost dignity. Its showing respect to a person who made the ultimate sacrifice. My old fella always said he didnt hate the german soldiers, they were exactly the same as him, fighting for their own survival, not some meglamaniac back in the fatherland.

Lets be honest if it was the politicians trying to dodge the bullets there would be a lot less conflicts.

Think folk should wear one personally. But when you are effectively forced go wear one, then it's all gone a bit wrong and creates situations like this.

 

Ultimately it should always be about choice.

Hmmmm, I proudly wear a poppy, however I wear a poppy to remember those who fought to protect our freedom and democracy.

 

Part of that freedom is to choose not to do something so he has the freedom to choose not to wear a poppy.

 

Rosler wore a poppy, as it remembers people on both sides, not specific acts, if you think what horrors are committed at times of conflict by soldiers of both sides I imagine every religion or nation could have a reason not to wear a poppy.

I'd have more respect if he had the balls to wear a poppy and then wrote an open letter to the people of Londonderry (Derry) to say that in no way does he support what the British Army did in Northern Ireland, but out of respect for the people including 50,000 Irish who died fighting for the allied forces that he will wear a poppy, that's all he needs to say and he would have my total respect and would have succinctly made his point about what happened in Londonderry and brought that to a wider audience, his current position is completely misguided.

I don't think it is. When you force people in a particular sector (TV, sport etc) to wear a poppy, you create this situation, not the individuals within it.

 

As I said, I don't agree with him, but by shifting the situation from one of conscience to compulsory, you are creating an issue.

As a point of principle you have to admire anyone who sticks to them. But the ironic thing about all this is that he now lives in a world where he has the right not to wear a poppy because of folk who stood up for their principles.

Hard to answer I know, but I think that is a well written, logical and honest letter.  Can't find fault with it myself.  He chooses not to with valid reasons.  We don't really see it from both sides and I imagine it would be rather inflammatory to many of his kin if he did wear one.
