November 8, 201411 yr Why should he be forced to wear a poppy to show his respect for those who died in the World Wars? Or any wars for that matter. Jon Snow doesn't wear one on Channel 4 News either. Is he a terrorist cunt too? Or is he exercising his right to show his respect in his own way, rather than cave in to the poppy fascism that seems to be all the rage at the moment? Wear a poppy or else you're disrespecting the war dead! It's bullshit. And yes, he's from Derry (you call it Londonderry, Mounts, but three quarters of the people who live there don't), and so a symbol which has such connections to the British Army (it's the Royal British Legion appeal, after all) is bound to stick in the craw. You may not like it, but that's the reality. It doesn't make him any less appalled at the incomprehensible loss of life between 1914 and 1918 or 1939 and 1945. So why don't you direct your anger somewhere else? Edited November 8, 201411 yr by davidjack
November 8, 201411 yr Of course he doesn't have to wear one But Why make yourself unpopular on a strange principle? He could easily put aside the stuff about the troubles and remember all of the Irish who died in both world wars, couldn't he? And the Derry/Londonderry stuff is not relevant to his discussion.

So why don't you direct your anger somewhere else? You don't wear one either do you? Poppy fascism my fucking arse. Do you have any idea how many men from the Irish Republic died in World War 1? About 50,000. Wear a poppy to respect them if you wish - just show some fucking respect. McLean is a cunt. A massive one in my view.

November 8, 201411 yr I think he is a touch misguided. The poppy is a sign of respect to the men & women who died. It is not a symbol of support of political decision making. Go to the war graves in france and you will see graves from both sides all treated with the utmost dignity. Its showing respect to a person who made the ultimate sacrifice. My old fella always said he didnt hate the german soldiers, they were exactly the same as him, fighting for their own survival, not some meglamaniac back in the fatherland. Lets be honest if it was the politicians trying to dodge the bullets there would be a lot less conflicts.
November 8, 201411 yr Think folk should wear one personally. But when you are effectively forced go wear one, then it's all gone a bit wrong and creates situations like this. Ultimately it should always be about choice.
November 8, 201411 yr Hmmmm, I proudly wear a poppy, however I wear a poppy to remember those who fought to protect our freedom and democracy. Part of that freedom is to choose not to do something so he has the freedom to choose not to wear a poppy. Rosler wore a poppy, as it remembers people on both sides, not specific acts, if you think what horrors are committed at times of conflict by soldiers of both sides I imagine every religion or nation could have a reason not to wear a poppy. I do not Agee with his desicion but I do think he has the right to choose. I do think he is a cunt though. Edited November 8, 201411 yr by Ani

So why don't you direct your anger somewhere else? I'd have more respect if he had the balls to wear a poppy and then wrote an open letter to the people of Londonderry (Derry) to say that in no way does he support what the British Army did in Northern Ireland, but out of respect for the people including 50,000 Irish who died fighting for the allied forces that he will wear a poppy, that's all he needs to say and he would have my total respect and would have succinctly made his point about what happened in Londonderry and brought that to a wider audience, his current position is completely misguided. November 8, 201411 yr He'd have been a lot better off issuing his statement saying that he was wearing one to show respect for those that that he chooses but not to disrespect his Northern Irish roots. Cock.
November 8, 201411 yr I had an imaginary blade and everytime his face appeared I pretended to plug it. Need help I think

I don't think it is. When you force people in a particular sector (TV, sport etc) to wear a poppy, you create this situation, not the individuals within it. As I said, I don't agree with him, but by shifting the situation from one of conscience to compulsory, you are creating an issue.
November 8, 201411 yr As a point of principle you have to admire anyone who sticks to them. But the ironic thing about all this is that he now lives in a world where he has the right not to wear a poppy because of folk who stood up for their principles. Btw, he's a cunt!
November 8, 201411 yr Fuck Wigan for letting him play without one, from the kitman up to the one-legged chairman.
November 8, 201411 yr I take a small amount of pleasure knowing that he contributes more to the British army in taxes than the average person. Cunt.
November 8, 201411 yr http://www.wiganlatics.co.uk/news/article/14-11-07-statement-regarding-james-mcclean-2070059.aspx To all those who think he's a cunt; if you were from where he was would you wear one? Hard to answer I know, but I think that is a well written, logical and honest letter. Can't find fault with it myself. He chooses not to with valid reasons. We don't really see it from both sides and I imagine it would be rather inflammatory to many of his kin if he did wear one. Rock and a hard place? Like folk have said, making someone wear a poppy seems a bit, well, fascist to me . . .

November 8, 201411 yr I'm also ok with his reasoning. It does seem that the last few years you have to wear one. Football teams never used to have poppies on shirts, I've seen a big ones on a house. It never used to be like that. Wear one if you want to, don't wear one if you don't. I'm ok with that.
