Been searching for a kids nicked bike around Bolton today, I had a good drive round and saw some disgusting sights, took about 40 pictures of back streets with shit dumped everywhere, mattresses sofas the fuckin works.

It's not the most beautiful of town centres but it's not the worst, not by a long chalk. The council do seem to be doing things such as the food and drink event and the Christmas winter wonderland was really good (much better than the chav filled hole that is Hyde park)

 

Town centres all suffer, bury is lucky to have it's market, the rock is ok but the old shopping centre is crap.

 

Just about to move from near Cambridge and whilst stunning it's a nightmare to shop, take the kids into etc it's all about what you need/want.

 

Mind you I'm moving back to Bromley and that's a town centre near a massive city and that does very well for itself.

I think the Eastern European school curriculums basically consists of Accordian playing, sand sculpting and amputee skateboarding.

Living (way) out of town as I do now, when I come back I always take one day to walk around the town centre. I have to say that every time it seems to get worse and worse. It's a very sad state of affairs, and I'm not sure if there's a solution.

 

As cheese said, town centres are really a thing of the past now. Over here, other than in bigger cities like New York, San Francisco etc., there are no "town centre" shopping areas. It's all malls and retail parks. The UK seems to be going the same way.

 

It almost feels like they've said "leave the centre to the scrotes now, and let them open as many pound shops as they want".

Not slating the place but as i said further up in the thread...why on earth would anyone outside of Bolton want to go into Bolton when you have Middlebrook retail park one side and the Trafford centre the other? Plus an ace city centre in Manchester right next door.

 

There's no reason to go in to Bolton town centre. Ever.

Just got back from a few days in Cork. The town centre is first class. Some top shops, D&G, Prada, Primark, actually, Primark was called Penny's

 

But it was also spotless and I'm guessing this cleanliness is what attracts the shoppers and the shops. And the pubs!

 

They didn't seem to have any out of town shopping malls which would also help the city centre to thrive.

 

The main routes into the town centre didn't travel through the scruffiest bits of town.

 

None of the above applies to Bolton.

Who owns all these shitholes and why don't the council do sommat about it?

 

It's a toleration of c*nts leaving places semi-derelict until the economy/property market picks up a bit, it's not tolerated in the residential sector, why should it be any different in the commercial?

 

There was a fucking skunk farm in the two clubs on Bank Street ffs, if that's not cause to step in somehow as the owners/landlords are obviously not fulfilling their responsibilities (although they didn't know/weren't involved in the plantations) then I don't know what is.

Did you drive in and out? The one way system is a nightmare.

Walked about a lot having flown in.

The biggest hassle we had was that the pedestrianised roads weren't actually pedestrianised. All made from blocks and looking every bit like you should walk on it except taxis and buses were exempt.

Another was the pedestrian crossings. You take your life in your hands when you cross because there's always one set of lights on go. The cars are supposed to give way to those on the crossings but some drivers never got that memo.
