got some good pubs and there looks to be money being pumped into the "old town"

Not slating the place but as i said further up in the thread...why on earth would anyone outside of Bolton want to go into Bolton when you have Middlebrook retail park one side and the Trafford centre the other? Plus an ace city centre in Manchester right next door.

 

There's no reason to go in to Bolton town centre. Ever.

 

Because it's a lot easier to get to Bolton than Manchester for anyone from north / west of Walkden. Not so much Middlebrook to be fair.

 

My folks still go to Bolton if my mum wants to buy a dress or whatever, they'd never go to Manchester.

 

Should be enough people in Bolton to support a decent town centre with a decent sized representative of each high street chain, it's more a question of not letting landlords/certain types of establishments/dereliction wreck the place I guess.

If things pick up, and I don't think they will, but if they do, I hope the likes of Burtons/Dorothy Perkins, Sayers/Hampsons or Accessorize don't ever darken our door again...It's the way of the world, but you'd like to think folk will remember the rats who scurried off the sinking ship if/when better times return.

 

I notice the independent coffee shop opposite Rhode Island has ceased trading...

 

It makes you wonder why someone would idle the time away drinking piss in Starbucks, watching the ins and outs of the public bog opposite, rather than support somewhere independent.

 

That said, I do sup in Wetherspoons in town, but I can't ever see them shutting up shop.

Only people from Bolton will go into Bolton. I've not heard of one person in my whole life who has chosen to go into Bolton town centre for anything other than a few beers before the match.

 

My wife and her mate went shopping for wedding shoes in Manchester today weirdly enough. Bolton is probably behind Mogadishu in the list of alternate places they could have gone.

 

It's not a dig. Just the way it is. That's why the town is failing, because nobody spends any money there.

 

Same applies for most town centres in the north west.

As an aside and because I can't be arsed starting a new thread, some fucking scrote nearly had a claw-hammer embedded in his head after trying the door and entering the house just a moment ago, only to beat a hasty retreat when I came down the stairs (the claw-hammer wasn't intentional, it was being used at the time, handily)...

 

Thought it was a mate until I realised I don't fraternize with grown men who wear those plastic JD Sports trainer bags slung across their chest...

 

Fucked off down the road in double quick time after claiming 'wrong house mate' - funnily enough he didn't stop to check his bearings or look for the right house, just fucked off.

 

I should've done sommat further now I think about it, I don't know what, just feel I should've done sommat (aside from bury the clawhammer in his head) - I'd like to think he shit his shellsuit pants when I appeared in the hallway and won't be darkening this door again in a hurry...

Bury got in with the big investment just before everything went to shit. Bolton didn't. They also had a joined up plan and a town centre that flows a bit better.

 

Not really one for knocking Bolton as it's too easy. But the fact is, we have no money in the town and no reason for anyone to invest in it. With the exception of the uni, which still does well out of overseas students' cash.

 

Couple with investment in Middlebrook some years back, parking charges and Trafford Centre about 20 mins away means it isn't going to be what it was ever again.

 

It needs to evolve and not as a side project to the university.

If they could transport the town hall and Le Mans Crescent brick by brick and rebuild it up near Middlebrook, they could just turn the town centre into housing.

 

Middlebrook could then have an Old Town area of authenticity and host huge artisan markets to rival manchester.
