Lt. Aldo Raine Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 I'll believe it when I see it The billion pound development around Bridge Street certainly seem to have come to a halt Quote

It would be nice if just one project could be seen through. Even the new bus station changed from plan A and was scaled down. The gateway to Bolton bridge is still my fave. Quote

Thought it was the BN that came up with the gateway to Bolton title rather than anyone from the council etc Quote

Spider Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Hard to know what the answer is with our town centre. It’s a genuinely stunning place around the town hall and the crescent; the market is brilliant; the layout is actually very pedestrian friendly. It’s got everything it needs to be a bustling, successful place. We know the Trafford centre and Middlebrook knocked the stuffing out of it, and Cliff Morris then mismanaged it to such a degree that he basically drove most decent businesses away. But, I’m going to say it, the people that you see hanging around the centre now are as much a reason for its demise as the ones stated above. It feels intimidating, rough as shit and desolate because of them. Great place. Shit people. And that needs sorting. Quote

That’s what James Stanley said. 😉 Provide the facilities and the good people of Bolton and surrounding areas will come. Bolton Food Festival proves that. I still remain optimistic 👍 Quote

Limit the number of betting shops and pound shops. Free parking, or £1 an hour tops. As it stands, I think the biggest retailer in town now is sports direct. Fuuucck meeee Quote

Reading the article, it says a similar scheme was used in Stockport. It seems to be getting good reviews now so maybe it will be a big boost for us to.🤞 Quote

Didn’t buy anything but it both looks and smells good. Various stalls with a variety of foods and a small bar. I’ve said previously, that side of town is looking up. Now sat outside the Octagon with a glass of red. There are worse places in the world. 😊 took the little one to a show at the albert halls last week, really surprised me how nice it is in there Quote

Bit harsh on @Boby Brno, at least he was drinking from a glass Anyway dunno what the answer is, loads of town centres gone the same way, apparently Wigan has and I'd hazard a guess Rochdale and Oldham Stockport seems to do ok though and they suffer just as much as the Trafford Centre and far closer and easier to get into Manchester from there They do stuff like this and other food fest type things with a decent food hall And if this isn't your thing there's always the Chester gate which is always busy Quote

The pub was called the same (now a post office) It was the council PR team despite the engineers saying not to as the general public only think in terms of car travel. The name came about because as you leave the train station and look down Newport Street towards the town center the town hall tower is in the middle of the arch thus a gateway into the town. IIRC at the time the plan was to have Newport Street buses/taxis only and heading into the town center so the name wouldn't seem so daft. The pub changing it's name to the Gateway was a surprise as they did nothing but whinge from beginning to end of the project. Was only a trainee at the time but it added to my time in retail to confirm that a huge chunk of the general public are thick as mince. Quote

Not just the Manchester satellite towns the whole country has the same issues. Bolton needs to condense it's shopping area the distance from Home Bargains to The Market Place is too far for what current high street retailing has to offer. Quote

Yeah put some shit in market place for if we are desperate. That ship has sailed now. Quote
PatrickBateman Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 As someone who lives within a mile of the town centre I can confirm it's worse than ever. A crack-addled skankhole where the locals are mostly jobless and on crutches (wonder why) and the new arrivals are also unemployed with Broccoli haircuts. Bolton Council should spend the money on the nice suburbs instead. Those fcking so-called Neighbourhoods they're building in town will be third-world ghettos in no-time. Last week I walked from Bolton train station to the Market Place and got asked for money NINE times coz I wasn't wearing a tracksuit. Quote
