Hard to know what the answer is with our town centre.

It’s a genuinely stunning place around the town hall and the crescent; the market is brilliant; the layout is actually very pedestrian friendly.

It’s got everything it needs to be a bustling, successful place.

We know the Trafford centre and Middlebrook knocked the stuffing out of it, and Cliff Morris then mismanaged it to such a degree that he basically drove most decent businesses away.

But, I’m going to say it, the people that you see hanging around the centre now are as much a reason for its demise as the ones stated above. It feels intimidating, rough as shit and desolate because of them.

Great place. Shit people. And that needs sorting.

The problem with the town centre (Le Mans crescent and the town hall area) is you’ve got to go through the shuttered quarter first and by that time a lot of minds are already made up.

Absolutely.

and the hordes of frankly alarming international beggars and gangs that just seem to loiter.

I’ve said it before, flatten crompton place, Newport street, Oxford st and a few of the surrounding streets and make one big park/urban gardens or whatever fancy name they want to give it.

They're in the middle of doing that here in Nottingham, the train station is miles away from the city centre and between it was/is similar to Newport Street but on a bigger scale. They've flattened a section of it and are turning it into a park.

If you can police a place like that properly then I think it could become a big asset to a town but how do you stop it becoming a no-go area at night?

The town hall and LMC are very picturesque and have featured in lots of TV programmes and adverts recently. Unfortunately putting “as seen when Poirot got shot” or “as seen on don’t forget to vote  advert” on tourist handouts won’t help.

Think they could take advantage of the town hall facade and create a street toward it from Bradshawgate.

Las Ramblas of Bolton.

First bit was serious btw.

Think there’s a plan for that, or at least there was.
that tapas place on Bradshawgate is very good , only spoiled slightly looking out of the big windows and seeing the arse end of Primark staring back.
if that was opened up like you say that would be a great view from there and possibly encourage more and bring Bradhawgate back to being a decent street

Yeah the run from town hall to Bradshawgate is due to be flattened once Primark finalise their move to the old Debenhams unit in The Market Place.

The main issues facing Bolton aren't unique a visit to any other town in the UK shows that.

Throw the gates to the kingdom wide open and invite them all in. That would fix it according to folk like you wouldn't it?

Indeed. I had the misfortune to have to go into Oldham town centre during the week. Now that’s a really grim place

We did

We gave them a majority 14 years ago and you’re absolutely correct, they made a right fucking mess.

At least you’re beginning to see it through those cataracts.

Every town in the country is fucking grim. That's 14 years of Tory governance for you.

Aye, cos it was the centre of the universe in 2010.

Amazon et al have had more affect on Town Centres than National governments.

There are, surprisingly, things that have gone to shit over the last 30 years that arent the fault of either the Tories, or Labour,

This threads 9 years old, and it started off moaning how shit the town centre had become.

Middlebrook is booming, Trafford Centre Booming, the Roc does well, these all have an affect on the town centre along with Amazon as you mentioned. Saying our town is shite because of the tories is almost as bad as saying the town died when the Wanderers left Burnden.

All those northern shitholes will be pristine within a couple of years- just you see! :)

Online shopping and out of town retail parks were the death knell for town centres

Definitely

Wife wanted to return someting to next yesterday so i made the effort

Parked up, ill return to this, walked in to market place through the vaults. Was about 1130, hardly anything open

Had a wander over to Crompton Place, empty unit after empty unit, inc rip off Greenhalghs, Marks gone, honestly just desolate

Anyway, parking, 3.50 for the 45 minutes we stayed
