Isn't the world a contrary place!! The presenter of the BBC documentary the other day about Porton down was working on Panorama at the time and he said the images he saw of the massacred Kurds that couldn't be shown clearly haunted him. No doubt huge mistakes were made, the pretext for going in, poorly equipped troops, no real idea of what to do after etc... A hideous human being was murdering thousands and threatening hundreds of thousands more. He had the be stopped. Feel hugely for bereaved relatives especially given ineffective vehicles etc. Referring to Blair as the world's worst terrorist is however wrong.

This report mentions that Blair wasn't quite convinced they'd exhausted every non war opportunity. Not sure Saddam would have changed so difficult to know what the best thing to do was.
July 8, 201610 yr never a blair fan but this load of old bollocks is a load of old bollocks I have to disagree, we went to war with a stretched armed service, on dodgy evidence and without exhausing all alternatives. To be fair I think if any of the other MP's were PM we still would have gone to war. But... it was on his watch and as such he has to take it on the chin.

What with the football, tennis, cycling and athletics on TV and a video link to the English Schools athletics my time is a bit limited for heavy reading. But some things are clear. Blair made a commitment to Bush without revealing that information to parliament or even his cabinet. Bush was so uninformed that he did not even know that there were separate sects of Muslimism. When the former Iraqi Ambassador to the UN begged him not to invade just a month before he did, Bush was astonished to be told that overthrowing SH would lead to sectarian chaos. The USA chose to disband the Iraqi Army and Police without pay. Hardly surprising, therefore that they almost all retained guns and anything else they could. The USA sacked anyone from positions of authority who was connected to SH's Ba'athist Party. This meant that almost all local officials were cast out of work, including almost all school heads. After all, the situation was just like, say Communist Czechoslovakia had been, in that joining the party was seen as an expedient career move rather than a true commitment. So, all in all, to remove all semblance of government and law and order was bound to end badly. But Blair is, and always has been, delusional. His focus was to gain power, which he did, but he had no idea how to be PM. He made a weak agreement ceding vast amounts of control to his Chancellor, whose own inadequacies far exceeded his own. "24 hours to save the NHS" was a winning slogan. Pity, therefore that he sidelined the previous shadow health spokesman and appointed newcomers into the health portfolio, asking them to devise a policy there and then.

The message somehow got lost to Blair, who carried on backing Bush. Think he was between a rock and a hard place.. Do you step down from backing somebody or stay true to your word Do you wait for more intelligence and risk more lives being taken, or them being used.. I have to admit being 19/20 at the time.. it sounded far fetched that they were "hidden" and that even the UN couldn't find them...
