May 27May 27 Well it took a couple of days but looks like we're right back in the Custard / Sluffy era now. should be a lively thread. No shade whatsoever, it's all entertaining to me. Edit: I give it a week Edited May 27May 27 by pfk505

Given what they've achieved so far with the remit of having to completely change the sqauds way of playing, mentality, having to beg steal and borrow in a season littered with injuries, I fully trust them to manage things this summer. They've clearly been planning this summer for a long time. With the forthcoming investment hopefully it'll all come fruition. You can only judge them on their efforts so far and it's so far so good, despite the odd failing. Be interesting to see what they do with a bit of cash. I'd like to know a little bit more about this investment but no doubt things will come out in time. Yes I don't doubt they've had established plans to act on once we knew what league we were in and maybe Johnston and Tutu may have been offered an extension if we had not gone up. I've been impressed with Schumacher as the manager (well coach is his official title)but the change to a new way to play took some time to bed in and only really started to work properly when Kenny and Rodrigues were brought on board. Don't forget that even though we might have a bit of cash coming are way, we (and all the other clubs) are capped at what we can spend on the squad (wages AND transfer spending) to 85% of our revenue, so we will have to be careful as to the fess we may spend and the wages we pay. Still exciting times ahead.

I do realise that will never change for some of them.

The first five of those were starters for most of the second half of the season, with the sixth being a regular sub. I understand that you are strongly anti Evatt but it's just silly to deliberately be in denial that Forino, Toal, Sheehan, Johnston and Tutu were half of the side that got us promoted even if you never rated them. If Harkin and Schumacher thought they were not required to be relied on then he would have done something about it in the January window and not relied on the five/six of them for nearly all the league matches for the second half of the season. Forino and Sheehan are quality not sure you are understanding what people are saying. As for the others you named we limped into the play-offs, and hands up TuTu was exceptional against Stockport and Bradford. The defence has been awful this season. Three keepers and again the only decent performances came in the play-offs Note the keepers are SS signings and not Evatt to even things a little. Off hand we got rid of more than three at Christmas Morley, Vic, Forrester, Cogley and the two keepers replacing them with Another two keepers Kenny, RR, Apter and Blackett-Taylor I would say the January signings got us over the line.
May 27May 27 This was SS's first starting line up 16 months ago. A 1-0 loss at Reading (Etete came on and gave away a pen in the 88th minute). That side was never getting us promoted. Credit to him and Fergal for the clear out. Two started on Saturday. Luke Southwood Will Forrester, Eoin Toal and George Johnston Josh Dacres-Cogley, George Thomason, Josh Sheehan and Alex Murphy Aaron Collins and Joel Randall Victor Adeboyejo Edited May 27May 27 by TrickyTrotter
May 27May 27 New manager wants his own players shocker.. Happens in every line of work, new guy comes in and has to manage what he has until they leave. Doesn't make anybody unprofessional in anyway, but the defence had issues, Evatt said it, and it's been painfully shocking this season. Baxter, Coleman, Sharman Lowe, Southwood, Miller.. Even Bonham, have all played badly at times, and the defence has been part of that. No issue in saying GJ, Toal, Forino are good defenders, but somehow it just didn't work. Currently have a back line of Christie, Toal, Forino and Conway with Inwood and Temple as backup, be interesting to see who he has lined up. Edited May 27May 27 by only1swanny

On Taylor being "a flop", I know we like everything to be black and white, but I've got some sympathy for his situation. If McAtee's season had ended with that sending off at Plymouth, as a few on here said it must do because he was a disgrace (maybe they can reveal themselves?), he would also have been considered a flop. But if he'd been discarded, we might still be in L1. If CBT hadn't got injured, Cissoko was an undoubted flop. If Bonham's season had ended v Luton (if we'd failed to get into the play offs) - an undoubted flop. Along with SS, who'd absolutely failed to deliver with such a poor points total. Taylor never got one chance to redeem himself after a couple of cup performances where Forino was as disinterested and careless as he was. I've seen the ability he's got (I'm probably on my own) and assuming he's mentally and physically fit I'm absolutely certain he'll bounce back from his nightmare season, maybe back in Scotland.

Perhaps when he reports back SS gives him a chance in the first few friendlies and perhaps tries Conway further forward SS will see him everyday and he will know whether he will be in his plans next season. Sometimes it takes a player 12 months to settle into a club

He'll never buy a drink again in Bolton for as long as he lives, but we need to be realistic. If he's a nailed on starter up front either we've got to have a shit hot defence or someone banging in goals from midfield. To be fair he was injured for a large part of the early season and struggled to get to full fitness so I think to score 11 goals and some of them very important ones is actually pretty impressive. Add in the assists like the one for ACD at Wembley and I think you’re being very harsh. At 26 he’s not even in his prime yet and I’ll have no problem or worries if he’s leading the line next season.

Out of all the signings last summer Taylor was the one I was most excited about, thought originally we had bought him as an upgrade on santos. Turns out ss wants him as a left wing/back. Still hoping to see what kind of player we have invested in.
May 27May 27 5 hours ago, Dr. Feelgood said: And there's an unknown story there. Whatever it is. A catalogue of woe/misfortune/fuck-ups from what I've heard. Wasn't fully fit when he arrived and whilst out of the team had a big bust up with his other half, got done for drink driving and got nicked on an assault charge (3 separate incidents at different times). Eventually got fit and produced a shambolic performance when finally picked on a night where the entire team was shite. Who knows what he might or might not be, his record in Scotland suggests there a player there, his time here doesn't so far.
May 27May 27 Would like Taylor to be given a second chance in the summer, he's on a decent contract 2 more years, and don't think we ever saw him at 100%, it was clear there was some kind of falling out between him and SS. New season might just be a time to reset that relationship. Suspect there might be some tactical changes in the summer anyways, probably keep the formation but alter some roles, movement and passing types etc. Like earlier on in the season we had a bad case of everything must go to ACD, we only really got over that when he got injured. There might be a role for a left sided centre half with some pace, Johnston got into some great positons during the semi's. Who knows maybe a set of full backs who carry more defensive load will mean the centre backs have more fredom to go up for set pieces, and the wingers don't have to track back as much, making Gale a bigger threat. I have sympathy with Taylor over the goal he gave away v Port Vale, he was injured. The key part is ‘Taylor never got one chance to redeem himself’ so surely ask why ? The manager seems the players nearly everyday, we get 90 minutes a week. If in that time all the others did enough in the managers to get a second but he did nt implies it is something he is or is nt doing in training.

May 28May 28 41 minutes ago, Farnywhite said: You could say though that SS improved those players got more out of them than evatt could Yes you could. I don't know if there is some form of view that I'm a Evatt fan, I'm not, as far as I'm concerned he reached his ceiling as a manager with us leading up to the Oxford final, iirc results were beginning to slip and it seemed to me other clubs (Not Oxford at the time we beat them 5-0) had sussed out Evatt ball and Evatt hadn't the wit to vary his game plan and no plan B to fall back to. My view of Schumacher is quite the opposite, I reckon he's by far the best manager we've had since Allardyce and he's quick to adapt and change shape and tactics, mid stream in games. The point I was making to my old friend Masi, which he refuses to hear, is that Evatt signings were the core of the team last season particularly when for whatever reason the the club (Harkin?) chose to deliberately go into the second half of the season with a parcity of defenders after letting Cogley and Forrester to leave without replacing them. Masi is fixated on his hatred of all things Evatt, stemming from I presume, when all the players under him were playing to a system that had been rumbled and which Evatt refused to (could not?) fix or move away from. A good example of which is look at the transformation of united from Amorim to Carrick, same players, different system, vastly different results. Conclusion being there was nothing wrong with the players, if you played to their strengths rather than they be forced into a system they are not suited too. Harkin cut Johnston, Tutu and Dempsey not because they were Evatt signings but because he didn't believe they could do it in the Championship (He may well have kept all three if we remained in the second tier - but we will never know now). If Harkin believes Forino, Toal, Sheehan and McAtee can do a job for him in the Championship he will retain them (and Schumacher will continue to select them), if he doesn't he will try to move them out - nothing at all to do with being Evatt signings. It's business as the saying goes, it isn't anything personal - half of the team that just got promoted were Evatt signings now playing under a new (Harkin/Schumacher) system - I don't understand why anyone would want to deny something that is there for everyone to see for themselves?
