Won't see the best of Schon and Tutu's crossing ability if they're mostly being played on their weak side.

Absolutely.

It wasn't just Evatt that did that neither.

We'll see what the plans are soon enough.

As for the Swede; if the stories are true, then SS et al may be taking a dim view of signing a player with an agitator for an agent. No reason he wouldn't do the same to us at some later point.

We've just won promotion using a gaggle of players nobody else wanted, littered with injury plagued loanees and players that were cast as cart horses, one trick ponies and generally weak as piss.

I think that if past glories counted for anything you’d have a point, but we were cut down to size by the Anderson fiasco and since then we have been a well supported survivor with ambition beyond our finances. We/our owners are not big fish in the scheme of things and we have to accept the situation.

To my knowledge, we have not turned a trading profit since we were saved so any progress up the leagues will be well and truly earned and anyone who thinks we can buy our way up is delusional especially since near liquidation made sustainability the keyword.

All we can do is hope that the players that we can afford to sign can be moulded into a team that drags us into the Championship by any means possible - and maybe that will attract new inward investment.

Football fans - me included - love the history, but history means nowt for this season - and I suspect it means even less to potential signings who have no connection to BWFC.

You can’t ignore the past history though lusty and it’s not ancient history. We’ve been at the top table in recent history with Sam. None of the teams in L1 other than perhaps Huddersfield have been anywhere near that in their entire history. We’re going through a difficult period but it could have been different now had we not blown it at Wembley. You’re right as far as moneys concerned but we have backers who want us to succeed and seem content to do so. I don’t doubt though that should we make it into the Championship new backers or owners will appear. I think you dismiss our history and size of club we are too easily. I believe our reputation, history and standing do mean something to players who’ve had no previous connection to our club and can make the difference in negotiations. What player at our level wouldn’t want to wear the shirt worn by the likes of Sir Nat, Youri or Jay Jay to name just three? I’m not bigging us up lusty I just don’t think you can write these things off so casually.

Aye, one of things which was frustrating me with SS. You're allowed to swap them around mid game too if it's not working. It can really unsettle defenders when they're used to wingers cutting in and back all of the time. If it's not fluent it stifles attacks.

I’m not and never will write our history off It’s important to me a fan - I attended my first match at Burnden with my dad in the 1950s and have been cursed ever since. Nor will the other L1 clubs’ fans forget theirs especially those that have been at the top table, like Bradford. Half the teams in League 1 have played in the top flight * some more recently than others.
But our most recent time in the Prem with SA etc ended over a decade ago and that’s more than the lifetime of some younger fans. The players you mention are our memories, not theirs and with every passing season we languish in the lower leagues we become less relevant to the younger generation outside our own fans.

Point I am trying to make is I don’t think the idea that we are “a big club” is necessarily true anymore and that our status doesn’t swing the signing of players.

Im sure the thought of playing in a decent stadium in front of a decent crowd is a “nice to have” but it doesn’t have the same pulling power as moolah.

* Some current league one teams played Division 1 top flight football but not since the rebranding as the Premier League.

Of the 9 that did play in the Premiership era, five did so more recently than us: Luton, Cardiff, Reading, Wigan and Huddersfield.

And got relegated just as quickly! 🙂

Im not in any way disagreeing that money is a very important factor as is length of contract but it’s not always the case is my point. For some, especially older players who don’t really need the money, other factors come into play like location, moving nearer home and family. For some it’s the possibility of promotion, career advancement or the likelihood of playing every week, it’s not always just about pure cash.

All things being equal would you choose another club to Wanderers at the moment? Yes if any of those other factors apply but no if they didn’t I suspect. Of course it’s ten years since our PL days but it doesn’t seem to have affected the crowds does it, we’re getting nearly as many as when were were in the Prem. only Huddersfield of those you named could remotely compare history wise to us and maybe that’s why a few of our targets reportedly chose them instead but I might be wrong, it may just have been the moola as you said. 😁

It's unusual for wingers to have one side they play on now. If schon played on the left consistently he would be too easy to defend. He's no right foot so full backs would just force him down the line. He doesn't have the pace Desmond has.

I almost feel schon has to play on the right to be able to cut inside on his left foot.

We are the biggest club in this division however you want to spin it.

History, gates, ground and dosh.

We fill every away ground and have unbelievable home attendances.

The fact we've been down here so long is a disgrace really. This way, way below our natural level.

Every club in the land finds that again sooner or later.

Longest we've ever spent out of the top flight is 17 years.

Clock is ticking

This sums up exactly how I feel. I’m surprised some of our fans don’t share the same view. We will get back to where we belong eventually. All those years of shite we’ve had to endure will make it feel even sweeter when we do.

Yep, we didn’t stand a chance there. Ah well, plenty more left backs around.

Have you seen Stephen Hunt recently by the way? Rough as toast, met him at a golf day a few weeks ago.

Best cross he made last season, was from the left, and early. McAtee strode onto it, didn't break stride and leathered it into the net.

Don't have to go by a man every time.

If someone is able to get close quickly and stop that, then that can create space elsewhere.

It's about how the team plays as a whole, to use the width and create crossing opportunities.

I remember Phil Brown frequently supporting his winger, and overlapping/underlapping to put crosses in.

I also think a winger on his right side is naturally in a position to get to the back post area and support the forwards to get on the end of crosses from the other side.

I'm all fan of a really quick player who can get on the end of his own crosses.

Crack that & he'll be a good 'un.
