If Dempsey or Christie are on the pitch then they take them, Sheehan is 3rd in line for that spot (but is often on the pitch when the others aren’t). Fine in a 3, not suitable for a 2 man midfield.

He’s was in a midfield 3 yesterday. The midfield was made up of two holders (Sheehan/Erhahon) and an Attacking midfielder (Dempsey)

He was in a midfield 2 versus Wigan and bossed the show. Same versus Rotherham at home. I generally prefer a midfield 3 but it's not fair to single Sheehan out as being the one incapable of doing a midfield 2 as he's had as many good games as the others in that 2. He's a class above in terms of technique and would thrive with better players. Even yesterday, if Bonham's pass is accurate Sheehan will be free in the middle. He just needs to never take corners again

What I will add though is that I think Sheehan would be better in a midfield 3 where he's told to be more attacking and leave the defensive stuff to Erhahon, and then add another more attacking midfielder (Simons or Dempsey)

Just because others don't share your view, and see things differently doesn't automatically make them wrong. Everyone knows the bloke's abilities. And his weaknesses. Being able to acknowledge both is no bad thing.

He’s not physical and he can go missing in games, lacking consistency. I suspect that’s why he’s still playing L1 football.

Evatt tried him further forward but he was ineffective against packed defences so he ended up dropping back to collect the ball off the toes of the CBs which in effect took one of our forward players out of the game. He is easy on the eye given time and space and always wants the ball - even when it’s the wrong option - but time and space are a rare commodity in this league and his floaty passes and crosses give the opposition even more time to get into position. He’s a gifted player, but as Lincoln showed us athleticism and perspiration can take you a long way in this league. I like Sheehan but….. I’m struggling to see where he could play and be more effective - and not get targeted so much. And with Rodrigues and Simons around I suspect that will become increasingly difficult. That begs the more general question of finding a system that better suits the specific talents of the players we have - maybe SS has too much choice? I can imagine a more direct 352 formation that would cash in on Dalby’s strength and Kenny’s nonstop running but it would be even more aggressive than SS’s current attacking approach and in turn leave our back 3 - and we need 3 CBs regardless imo - even more exposed at times. But that probably wouldn’t feature Sheehan and only involve 1 winger. I said it earlier in the season and I’m still struggling to see an effective role for Josh in this team in this league. I’m guessing the reason is that there are no pushovers who would give him the time and space he needs this year. Maybe he would be more effective in the Championship?

People who do rate him tell me what you see? Exactly how I feel. He's supposed to be our main man. But he reminds me of Rico in that he slows the pace of the game down to a crawl. In reality he creates very little for a creative midfielder. I can't remember the last time I saw run a midfield. I mean it's very nice to watch him pick the ball up from the keeper and sensibly play a sidewards pass, clap clap clap. But that doesn't win you any points. He very rarely affects the game in the way that he should and I don't think it's a coincidence that we had one of our best runs in the season while he was out of the side. And now he's back, we're drawing games again. Honestly it annoys me his much he gets bum chummed. He's not Sergio Busquets. He's a very naughty boy! 😁 Sergio Busquets.
February 22Feb 22 Josh Sheehan is a bloody great player. He's our beat player on the ball and can dictate and control the whole flow of a game. He was poor yesterday though. Mainly because they were on him like a rash, we've seen this many times before. Especially when he's only got EE and Demps as his outlet, he was stranded and bang under the cosh. Some games suit him, some don't.
