Training Puppies

Anyone done it?

Stupidly we've acquired three, currently around 1o weeks old.

Driving me bonkers, house training OK, but with plenty of mishaps.

They've loads of energy but can't go out yet (second jab tomorrow)

Any tips?

Be firm with them and let them know if they've done something wrong.

Praise them when they do something right.

Don't let them do anything as a puppy you wouldn't want them to do as an adult dog.

3? Kinell. Rather you than me haha.

Don't let them do 'human things' like jumping on the furniture. Put a bell on some string near the back door and train them to 'dingle' it when they need to go out.

Chuck em in the garden and leave em to it.

don't let them lick your face

don't let them on furniture

don't let them upstairs

when they poo on the floor, pick it up and rub it so far up their nostrils it comes back out of their bum don't tell them off, just reward them for doing outside - particularly on a neighbour's lawn.

Consider getting a GPS collar. Hundreds of em seem to go missing round here.

Sounds horrible but you need to scare them.

They can never win, anything.

Me and big sam had some right royal tear ups but he soon figured who was boss.

No tit bits and don't let em upstairs.

Few do the cage idea but ours just projectile sharted through the grill with his sphincter pressed up against it like he was in the leppings lane end.

Mistake we made was letting a cute lab puppy sleep on our bed from the off

5 years later he's still sleeps on bed but weights 40kg and no fucking room

Depends on the type and personality of the dog. Ours is soft as shit and a proper pack dog so very submissive no need to scare her.

We use a crate but it is more like a kennel and her 'safe place' she goes in when she wants or is wet. Never as a punishment.

Never give them food from table or anytime you are eating.

Never sleep on your bed. We stuck to not on furniture for about 5 minutes as it was funny watching her try and climb up.

Get pet insurance.

But best advice I can think of is under no circumstances take on more than 1 at a time. Definitely not 3.

ours spends the day on its own

sleeps on the bed unless something needs barking at

sleeps in his bed at night

sleeps on settee after tea til bedtime

no treats

Missus is a vet nurse and the amount of dogs they have in that are overweight/diabetic is getting higher and higher.

Dry food, loads of water, it's all they should have.

don't let them lick your face

don't let them on furniture

don't let them upstairs

we allow the latter 2

I didn't mind the first till he did it after he'd ate some of his own shit when he was about 4 months old, so that ones of the list now

he sleeps wherever he can be bothered, but never in his bed - he's happy to lie on the cold kitchen floor next to his bed, but he gets on the bed in the morning when my alarm goes off

sometimes he's a bit whiny when he wants to play, but that's about it

he had his balls lobbed off yesterday -  had to leave him in the kitchen with the helmet thing on all night so he couldn't jump on owt and he whined all night, the next week or so will be very challenging for us all

never ever under any circumstances feed them pineapple

Keep them away from sunlight or any bright lights - they hate them.

Never get them wet.

And, most important, never, ever feed them after midnight.

If you're relying on a clock radio for your feeding schedule - always make sure it's plugged in. ;)

Is covering your knob with peanut butter classed as a treat?

it is, I love it when the crunchy bits get trapped under my foreskin

Don't leave any cushions lying around or shoes unless you are planning on throwing them out anyway.

Dogs will do anything for food, get a 'clicker' and click it then reward when they have done what you want them too. Nothing if they don't do what you want them to.

Treats don't make the dogs fat either - bone idle owners do. You've seen Parsnip, she's in good nick - granted her owners are a pair of puddings but she gets out 4 times a day

True, our dog eats shit loads - but then he gets walked for just over an hour every morning and at least an hour every evening - and goes on proper long walks on a weekend

Wow thanks all.

Quite keen on the diet side of things, (suppose I should be as I sell pet food), not bothering with loads of biscuits, and trying to use as little as possible whilst training.

'Treats' or rewards, are dried tripe or dried sprats and will be taken into account when we measure food. Not going to bother with artificial/manufactured stuff.

Main difficulty is house training is ok, but if one has an accident then the rest seem to want to overpiss!

I've been told to use bicarb solution to remove scent to help to stop them from pissing in the same place rather than going outside. Obviously mop straight away with floor cleaner/disinfectant but they seem to smell the same area and then start to piss.

Gradually improving but this is the hardest bit!

Learning their names and recall doing quite well.

Three lads, and they battle Royal at times- hoping they'll chill a bit once I can take them out properly and burn some energy off.

Haha, nice one Dave. Walking don't be a problem, and as they are collies they'll out walk me!

He seems to love going to the pub too...

Liven up the training process by setting the pups 'Apprentice' style tasks, such as fetching your slippers. At the end of each round of tasks give one of them a reet good dressing down - creating a false crescendo before turning unexpectedly to dispense with one of the others.

Instead of 'your fired!' your catchphrase could be 'you're going down to Bolton Canal in a pillowcase!'

They're good at nicking my slippers!

As I have a pond perhaps I should rig up a canine ducking stool.

Bases covered there but fwiw we put down paper everywhere then gradually reduced it to a few strips by the door before getting rid altogether.

As said above, praise when they're good ignore when bad.  (although I reckon using a harsher tone and saying no, without screaming at them, can help get the association as well)

Just like a rug rat basically ;)

3 collies . . . rofl!

Get a couple of cages to keep them in while you're not at home, orherwise they'll wreck your house. It's not cruel, it becomes their safe little haven and it's even better if they can sleep in there (but not for toilet use) - plus it gives you somewhere to put them when it all gets a bit too much - and it will !!! Enjoy????
