Wanderlust
MOTD didn't even begin until the mid 60's. We won 1 nil away at Blackpool in the first match I saw on our tiny Murphy telly and that was years earlier. ITV I think. Shit match BTW and it was really boring compared to going to Burnden for the live experience of watching Greavo, Hoppy, Roy Hartle and Syd etc especially as the commentary was as flat as a pancake and they just didn't make any effort to get the atmosphere. Little bit of info about that game. Was this game recorded? In 1960 the first live broadcast from the Football League was made by ITV when Blackpool played Bolton Wanderers at Bloomfield Road; the match kicked-off at 6:50pm, but the live broadcast didn't start until 7:30pm to allow fans who attended a 3pm kick-off to view the match at home. gonzo
Now you can watch every game on a mini telly that doubles up as a mobile phone whilst pretending to it you’re in Spain. Games gone

I remember there was a big hoo-ha about whether or not the idea of televising league matches would ever take off (haha!) and my grandad banging on about how attendances would crumble if it ever did. Opinion was divided at the time.

There’s some absolute whoppers in the lower leagues and even non league. Cant get my head around some of the figures. Dunno where everybody comes from. TV must have had some effect on keeping folk away, but grounds are a lot more family friendly than they used to be.

Presumably some of the new/extended stadiums are partly responsible. Arsenal, Tottenham, West ham around 60000. Liverpool and city now around 55000. Utd and Newcastle already big. If we take Brighton, Southampton, Derby, Stoke, ourselves etc over recent times we've all had crowds bigger than in previous stadiums.
