And a few pages back, great long post from Crawley - knocked a lot on the head with that post. Really hard to wake up every morning without your kids under the same roof as you. And go through many years of your life only seeing them a handful of times a month. But you pull through. Just have an eternal guilt that you didn’t do enough, get involved enough, provide enough, etc. But that’s all bollocks in the end. Had a great day on the lash and at the beach with my 20-year-old in Devon last week. Didn’t quite enjoy cleaning her bastarding filthy student house the day after in the heat with a hangover! Dragging six girls worth of pubes and hair with soap scum out of the shower plug hole… and cleaning out scuzzy fridges and freezers (my pet hates in life are dirty fridges/dirty microwaves). The smell in the house was like a 7 year-old cum sock that’s been forgotten about and has weeds growing out of it!! Still love them and the feeling is reciprocal. (Daughters, not cum socks). It doesn't get easier, you just cope better.

Ive felt shit these past few weeks, being eating utter shit, drinking fuck all water and nailing the ale at weekends. Chuck Big Es civil ceremony in there and its a recipe for disaster. Got on top of past few days and instantly feel brand new. what's amazing is how amazed I am when I realise this yet again as in have a time off the booze with good exercise - diet ok feel great have a beer - meh, not bad, but won't have any tonight then I do, feel a bit more shitty, end up having more that night few nights in a row, right, I feel like shit, I'm not enjoying this, need time off instantly feel better, like it's a surprise more time off booze, feel great then think I'll just have a few beers tonight, won't do any harm then next day maybe a few tonight, but that's it for a few days it's not and so on currently on day 2 of a break after inadvertently ending up on it for 7 nights

That month off I had really was an eye opener. But, and this is the clincher, I fucking ADORE beer

Like TMGC alluded to, its the mind telling you need something for a quick hit to boost your senses. During a bad phase I feast on carbs and high sugars. My daily order at Abingdon bbq last week was a large sausage, bacon and egg baton, two hash browns in a bag and a pie for later. In from work, 4 slices of toast and bag of crisps to see me on till my tea. Absolute madness. Wonder why I was up late every morning eve after 9 hours solid kip.
July 20, 20224 yr The last 3 months are probably the shittest I've felt in a long long time and that's primarily down to me reaching for the ale, then eating shit, and doing no exercise. Like everyone has said, we're all experienced enough to know it's a shitty circle but all keep going back to it which goes to show how addictive a drug it really is.

During my month off I did drink a fair few 0% beers and the german ones were mainly decent.

My wife is always the first to spot when I need it rather than want it and Im beginning to slip in to old ways. Scary how it can grab hold. Its also scary how much ale is ingrained on our culture and how many functional alcoholics we all know.

I feel that a pint of Staropramen with a salad lunch on Saturday didn’t really set me up for the couple of beers and 2 ciders at the beach with you. After we went our separate ways, I ended up having 2-3 pints of Madri, half a bottle of red wine and then onto a couple of Aperol Spritz. Did stuff a pizza down me though. Cleaning gutters on a caravan the following morning with a hangover and very little sleep (will return to this below) is a recipe for getting the noose out! Ahhh, beered-up sleep. Not that feeling a bit grim after mixing your drinks the previous day and eating shite is enough, throw in that rocking and rolling in bed, half asleep, half grumbling and farting, 5 trips for a piss and 23 degree heat. Before you know it, its morning and you’ve had next to no sleep. Need to knock the ale on the head. And mixing. That’s the devil’s work.

I've found that the biggest challenge, stopping for that first night once I get that out the way, it's not so bad but stopping for a night, when you know you're having one the next night or so, that's also a challenge the toughest days are sunday, tuesday and wednesday

Just how big is this caravan if the distance between bed and entry door qualifies as a trip? Surely you just stand at the door and piss don’t you?

July 20, 20224 yr Only been having a little tipple for a year or so (since last year's euros), after packing it in for a few years following my last seizure. Never been a big drinker anyway, but I stopped anyway, and now I'll have a bottle of beer, or a glass of wine of an evening and that's it. Did share a bottle of wine one evening this holiday, but did bowt last night. Can enjoy a little drink more now than ever, as it is genuinely about the taste.

July 21, 20224 yr Without regular exercise I dread to think how my mental state would be, after a couple of days without I get edgy and tetchy, soon as I’ve done even 1 hour I’m feeling 100% better, as I get older I just hope my body allows me to continue to exercise. Exercise and cutting back on alcohol really is the best thing for mental health IMHO. P.S. also stay away from negative types. Edited July 21, 20224 yr by Mounts Kipper

Strangely, exercise can become addictive, and the brain can start craving it, making you feel a bit shit if you miss a bit. Like anything I suppose, too much of a good think..
