Proper Shithole Pubs.

With the lockdown ending and most of the drinking establishments getting a lick of paint, i remember going in the Crown pub in Tyldesley, it was off the main drag and hardly used, a proper Walkers pub built near a mill. Place was falling apart, outside bogs with a stench what rats would even venture clear, and a clientele of us underage drinkers and old men with missing limbs.

First beer I drunk regular was 4x

Trying my dad's whitbread pale ale 'from the outdoor' and mcewans export as a youngster meant it was always going to be lager for me

Aye, stones was another he used to bring home

Orange can, I think

Yeah, XXXX was the lager of choice in the early 90’s for me. Mainly because the only other option was Löwenbrau at the time but it was the 5.5% loopy juice back then and everyone seemed to end up wanting to break each other’s noses after 4 pints.

I switched to Newcy Brown for a while but always ended pissing in weird places. Mental that stuff. I woke up in a neighbours rose bush one morning after about 8 bottles of it, piss down my jeans and soil up my nose.

Eventually I had to stop drinking it.

There’s not many bad bitters, just bad landlords. Look after your ale and it’s then down to personal taste.

Bass was always a beltin’ pint in the Anchor just off Bradshawgate opposite Leena Tandoori.

Correct, and yeah it was, just tucked in around the back, lovely little boozer was the Anchor

Loved that place. Was like a country pub but in a backstreet where everyone went for a piss/vomit/blowjob whilst they queued for a taxi.

4 pints of Stones and you were slurring, but was sober, good pint though on draft, mostly sold in Bass pubs i think and the Derby Ward Labour Club at the bottom of Deane Rd.

Correct on all counts.Apart from the good pint bit in my opinion. It didn't half give you a headache. Chemical ridden ice cold shite.

I got the worst headaches ever supping Stones in the 70s, i thought it was me, but a lot of folk have said the same.

I never really took to stones. Preferred boddies when it was a Manc brew

Boddies was nice

but never travelled well

As for Greenalls, the sign used to show a woman blowing a trumpet.

Word was that she was saying 'your arse will be like this in the morning'.

Calling in a country hick pub on the way to Ipswich in 80 and being served the flattest pint than a London boozer, i've never supped Greene King ale since.

3 worst lagers i've ever had

Gold medal Lager - sold in Angels nightclub in Burnley, my mate said " I wouldn't like to try the fucking Bronze"

It was truly rancid.

Grunhalle - Just pure shite, when you got half way down the glass + it had warmed up a little,, the smell was fucking putrid.Usually served at 20 deg celsius - fucking horrible, properly fucking horrible.

Stein Lager - A Thwaites  brew? It was beyond rank, i know they sold it in the Starkie, which i didnt often use , for various reasons.

I'd like to add a number 4 - Slalom Lager ( From Scottish+Newc brewery iirc) an acquired taste, that not many folk acquired .

A grim offering indeed.

Even shite like Carling is like nectar compared to the piss we had to sup in the 70's/80's.

Boddies in the Halfway House in Farnworth was perfect.

I know it was technically not a pub but surely the Wood Street Social Club deserves a mention.

Every scutter, wino, freak, oddball and complete nutjob could be found in there. Can't actually believe I went in more than once. Must have been morbid fascination. Probably three times from memory. Have a recollection that some sad sack died in there after slipping and either impaling himself or cutting some major artery on the jagged remains of a bog pedestal? Reported in the BEN?

The thing about Wood St was it was licensed to serve on after the old 3o'clock chucking out time, their used to be a few places like this and obviously attracted some dubious characters and folk just wanting to have a good sesh used the catholic club near Trinity St a few times it was packed with pissed up builders and thick with smoke ,I wonder how I'm still batting .

NOW that pubs are open 24 hours all these old places and memories are gone

back in 70*S used to get dragged into all sorts of bowling / sports /snooker clubs cos they had a licence after normal hours

To be fair we could all sup 24 hours if you knew the right place

Ours was Marys ,in Town

Founders Arms

being converted into apartments

Kinell I'd forgotten all about that place! 😁

I reckon in the 70s & early 80s over 50% of pubs in the north west were Greenalls.

Who can complete this well known slogan from the day?

" Smile please, you're in ---------------------- ----."

Greenhall Whitley Land

There used to be a cartoon behind bar in Blue Boar IIRC showing where Greenalls was tapped from - a horse pissing in a bucket

The 2 biggest shit holes i have been in recent years on an away day as to be:

That pub in Rotherham facing the station.

The Burton away one that was allocated to away fans.

Both absolute minus zero star public houses.

Rotherham where the landlady bitched you up😀
