March 8, 20215 yr As far as evening games at Burnden go I think that is top of my list. It’s not so often when the excitement and anticipation before are lived up to during the game and carried on after looking forward to an English Cup Final at Wembley. And Mixus goal....Fucking mental
March 8, 20215 yr I'd driven up for the original date only to hear it was called off due to the rain as I was passing Halifax. Worst rain I've driven in and then me fanbelt went. Worth it for the "replay" though
March 8, 20215 yr Couldn’t get tickets for 1st leg wasn’t they having some work done so reduced allocation
March 8, 20215 yr I remember leaving the first leg up the alleyway at the side of their ground. We were in top voice singing 2-1 is not enough to the tune of Go West by Pet Shop Boys. I was absolutely confident we'd overturn that, and so we did on that fine evening. My favourite night match at Burnden was when we turned Spurs over 6-1.
March 8, 20215 yr Burnden Paddock was incredible that night. It was absolute carnage after each of our three goals. Made all the better for being able to celebrate with folk who'd suffered with us through the 80s. It was our first year with players from abroad since having Tad Novak and Dusan Nikolic in the early 1980s and Mixu and Richard Sneekes did us proud that night. A few years later we had that semi v the skiprats at The Reebok and people didn't seem to care about the League Cup. We didn't fill it for that win v Villa in 2004 either. Swindon (and Everton in 77) a far cry from the third and fourth of our League Cup semis.
March 8, 20215 yr Great night. It felt like we had waited ages for Mixu to really belt a ball, like a bloke his size should be capable of. What a strike. As always it was SJM to score the decisive winning goal.
March 8, 20215 yr Good god, if Carlsberg made football matches, that was just a special, special night.
March 8, 20215 yr Brilliant night proper electric atmosphere even before the off, the worry when they got the first and the elation when mixu smashed that goal in and you just knew we’d get the win.

March 8, 20215 yr Remember the away end going mental when Fjortoft put them ahead, and thought that was that As good as it got on the burden terrace

March 8, 20215 yr I remember working on a rendering job on the original day of the tie in Farnworth, it was bitterly cold and started snowing and after a while all our work fell off the gable end, my mate said fuck it, pack the tools and mixer away, were fucking off home. ☺️
March 8, 20215 yr Author We ended up in waht to used to be Sundownders, absolutely pickled when we staggered out. Great days and woke up looking ahead to my first major Cup Final as a Wanderers fan.
March 8, 20215 yr Weirdly, we should've played Swindon in a league game on the Sat 11th Feb, but decided to play them the day after in the 1st Leg of the Semi.

March 8, 20215 yr Left it to late to get a ticket , luckily a mate was working in Swindon at the time, strolled up and purchased 4. Stood on the embankment that night was a strange experience.
What a night.
