Seen enough international football over the years to realise that there are many who don't sing their national anthem all over the globe. A non issue for me. A weird one this. In so many other sports, especially team ones, they belt it out, loud and proud. As you say, it's not necessarily the case in football. Maybe there is a larger proportion of republican types in the game.

Been amusing watching people get their knickers in a twist over this, but completely forget we've recently had a swede and italian manage us pathetic Edited September 8, 20241 yr by L/H White
September 8, 20241 yr I can understand why the Irish might be a little bit annoyed at Declan Rice given he played for them three times. But he was born in Kingston-upon-Thames. Grealish was born in the midlands and has a brummie accent. It's not like we've got lads from County Meath or Donegal turning out for us. Our lot didn't turn up with flags saying "The snake returns" when Jackie Charlton managed them against us either. Not to mention the countless others with dubious qualifications to play for Ireland. I love the Irish, they're brilliant people. But come on....
September 8, 20241 yr The bigger issue is that they thought Rice should play for them, at all. Not only was he born in Surrey, but both parents were born in England, as well. Grealish is the same. Born in Birmingham to two English parents. In the case of both players, their Irish background relates to some (not all) of their grandparents. if you’re an Irish football fan, the list of your players who were born, raised and wholly developed elsewhere, should be a concern. Booing those who choose to play for their (and their parents) country of birth is masking a fundamental issue with your domestic game and player development.
September 8, 20241 yr The Irish blindly forget the absolute shit load or international mercenaries from this country that have played for Ireland despite being as English as they come.
September 8, 20241 yr They both seemed to enjoy it. Especially Grealish. Must of been fucking boring keeping up the booing ha

If you want to be pedantic he was Cappadochian from a province in the Roman Empire situated in modern-day Turkey. It's not remotely pedantic. There were no Turkic people in 'modern day Turkey' at the time so saying he was Turkish is just 100% wrong. Anyway glad you've had a google and realised he was Greek. If you ever want fun on holiday, try telling a Greek person they're Turkish, or vice versa.
September 8, 20241 yr I'm in Cyprus soon. I might play a bit of Turkish/Greek roulette. Sounds a right hoot.

None of the above makes St George English and given that St George is revered in a wide number of religions around the world - he's big in Nigeria you know - it is still an anomaly that he is portrayed as a symbol of English nationalism to the point some dickhead has his back inked with an image. Boudicca/Boudicea I could understand at a stretch.

I think it's just the fact both close to play for Ireland coming up through the ranks and then jumped ship once England came calling I find it a bit odd both chose to play throughout the Irish youth set up given they aren't Irish

I reckon it’s as simple as that

Plus the Irish FA is notoriously lax in checking people's dim & distant relatives. How many caps would McAteer have got for England ? (The answer's 'zero' btw). I recall Jason McAteer telling a story that when he applied to play for Ireland he managed to track down his Irish grandfather to one of three people in a village (I think the three had the same name). He didn’t know which one it was, so they just picked one at random and put that on the form. Application accepted.
September 10, 20241 yr I think Cascarino was made eligible whilst having no connection through his parents or grandparents. Not that he was any good like.
