I remember a discussion on here pre pandemic about taking money abroad and pre paid cards. What is the advice and do any of you recommend a card in particular? 

I've got a Revolut card, works a treat anywhere, the only charges I get are at weekends, which isn't a high % compared to my bank card.  I'm sure someone will be on a better deal though

Halifax Clarity card. Not a prepaid one, but zero charges for using abroad.

Not been abroad for a while but I like Revolut, that I can just convert money over and instantly withdraw it, so pre-paid but not really. No chance of being scammed.

i used revolut the other week in cz

 

was great but didnt work in one shop

think it needed to have mastercard

 

ive now got a physical card so can do mcard and visa

Starling account for me, I have a Revolution card too so that covers me for Visa and MasterCard…not that I’ve been abroad for about 4 years so might not be the best options anymore

to check, with the physical card, i transfer into the app, then take card to a card machine to withdraw?

like i say, only had the app while i was away

Yep, it then pings your phone to confirm the withdrawal.

I was abroad recently and did this, so easy to do.

I did also, in one restaurant use it to pay on the contactless terminal, which it did with no issue.

It was the first time I've had a Revolut card, and I wish I'd used one before, a lot better than using my normal debit card, as the e/r was really good

Just downloaded the app and ordered a card, looks perfect for what I want.

Starling best I’ve ever had for travel purposes. 

Monzo for me.

I have Monzo, Starling and Revolut. 

Starling i prefer now. Use it like a credit card and get the mastercard rate with no other fees. £700 a month withdrawal as well i think rate free. 

The key when abroad now is just using card and not cash.

Are travelers cheques still a thing?

My Nationwide flex plus allows free withdrawals and no fees abroad

was on a works do to Portugal the other year, both me and the gaffer have revolut cards.

Both went to the same hole in't wall, both withdrew €200.

I witdraw as Local currency, he withdrew as Sterling and used the banks exchange rate.

His transaction was £25 dearer.

Revolut really good on xchange rates.

Starling, Revolut, Monzo as others have rightly said.

Withdraw a small amount of local currency as "just in case" cash, otherwise pay everything by card, no matter how small the price.

Always always always pay in local currency when using card abroad.

got a Starling one insted less then 15 mins to set up 

Fucked up not getting a RC. £10 to withdraw money over here at the min.
