Phil Neal had no money to spend whatsoever, and the football was more entertaining, win or lose. He was Good for Bolton, as Evatt as been. Unfortunately he as spunked millions on nobodies, which could have long standing implications when we dont get promoted. Quote

Ive been anti Evatt for over 18 months, and have had alot of shit off fellow posters, which, is part and parcel of being on a forum from the Evatt inners. I was in the minority, now a majority. Unfortunately a few still believe in him, they have taken to much deludemol. Budget wise, we should be top three. We shouldnt be in this position. Recruitment is piss poor, any manager letting footballers on a football pitch with socks rolled down, no shin pads, is weak as piss. We get enough injuries, lets not invite any more! Fair enough. For the record I also think it’s time for a change. The reason I gave the hypothetical Sharon scenario is that I don’t think it’s quite as easy as ‘just sack him and all will be ok’. Recruitment in football is tough. Even city have signed some duffers. I’m not sure we have a top 6 budget. Huddersfield, Brum and Wrexham will all have higher combined transfer and wage bills I expect. We’re probably 4th! We’re underperforming for sure, and I expected us to go up this season.  Im intrigued why you’ve been Evatt out for 18 months. This time 12 months ago we were on course for promotion. What made you change your mind after the first Barnsley play off games? Edited January 17, 2025 by thebells Quote
Dr. Feelgood Posted January 17, 2025 Posted January 17, 2025 Phil Neal's lasting legacy was to stop tje rot and start getting dome output from the youth squad. McAteer & Stubbs especially. But ther was no love for him. Not sure why. Quote

What made you change your mind after the first Barnsley play off games? I agree, we was on for promotion, it didnt happen. When we lost at Pompey, and from then, it was all downhill. We was so inconsistent it was unreal. We had chance after chance, but it didnt happen. We was dropping points against really poor teams. Evatt couldnt change anything then, we had a bad last three months, fortunately we had accumulated enough points to be near the top. We bottled it, not sure who was culpable for that? The maestro blamed injuries, got away with it, not this season! Quote

Stubbs joined into the Youth squad. McAteer came from Marine, but as a junior. The point though is moot. He got the youth delivering. Quote

Tony Mowbray back to West Brom so that’s another potential replacement gone. Hope it goes well for him tbh   Quote

One of the best pound for pound signings in my lifetime. Debut v Rochdale in FA Cup, I remember thinking who's this scrawny kid, why is he playing. First time he got possession, a class above, skill, composure, vision, swagger without being cocky. First impressions of new signings are very rarely far wrong, I had a similar feel when Mark Davies came on for his debut at Blackburn. Instant quality on the ball, without the injuries he would have been another of the best bargains in my time. Neal knew how to put a team together (and signed Andy Walker) but stayed too long in the end, leading to him falling out with us supporters. Rioch inherited some good players and added a few of his own and the rest was history. We just need that blue touch paper lighting again Quote
