Quitting the booze

Allen Carr (not the goofy “comedian”) writes books about how to stop drinking and/or smoking.

My sister read it a few years back and, whilst she want a full on alky, was overdoing the booze.

After reading this book, she hasn’t touched a drop since. Not one.

So, as a challenge, I said I’d read the book and prove that this kind of thing doesn’t really work and that she was just ready to stop anyway.

about 2 weeks ago, I reached just over the halfway point. Since then, I’ve probably had 2 pints and one glass of wine, none of which I particularly enjoyed.

I’m annoyed for several reasons:

* I adore a drink, and I feel the pleasure has been stolen from me

* My sister was right and I was wrong about the book

* I feel somehow invaded by this author who I never invited into my life in the first place.

* I want a beer, but don’t want a beer. It’s fucking WEIRD.

I need help in getting back on the horse.

Im not going to preach, but if you really want to kick the booze (he does fags as well), then I’m here to tell you, brothers and sisters, that this fucker works.

You’ll work your way through it, just a phase your going through!

I'm sure I will. It's the youthful binge drinking when you 'go for one' that needs to be pulled back.

Since I hit mid 40s I've just realised I can't do it anymore - the hangovers are just too evil, even a couple of drinks on a weeknight make me feel tired the next day.

Went to my first gig without having a drink this year - had a great time and didn't spend a shit load of overpriced drinks. Went for a meal beforehand and enjoyed it much more. Guess its an age thing.

aye, I much preferred teenage hangovers where you were sick till nothing came out whilst sweating profusely, grab a cold shower, drink some water, then crack on

I've witnessed this in Bristol, Liverpool, Hamburg* and London - it really is a thing

*Hamburg was extra special, as only about 3 hours later, @DazBobwas awoken by a pissed up @Big Edry humping him senseless in his hotel room. It's safe to say one of the two of them didn't find it as funny as the other one did 😉

You should have seen his shoes in Bangkok

Sounds like a recording of mine and the wife's conversations over the past month.

Unless you've a free wood source the end up being more expensive

We never used ours

Miss Fogarty has one of them and buys a couple of half tonne bags but they last her a couple of winters. She reckons some woods burn hotter and/or last longer than others but I don't know which is which.

I only know they are half tonne bags because I have to get it into the garage.

First tough day of Dry January....Friday....been at work for a week...loads to do next week.......

So, I've planned a walk tomorrow in the North Downs to prevent any Friday temptation. I don't normally drink on a sat or sunday so once tonight is out of the way, I'll be good until next thursday!

I'm ok with this weekend

it's next weekend I'm thinking about, going to see some mates for the evening

telling myself that one night off is ok

and that abstinence is overrated

currently trying to decide if I'll look back on this month later in life as the one where I didn't drink, like some badge of honour

probably not

I've got an app - "Try Dry" where you log each day if dry or not (and if not, how much you drank), because I like to log things

my best month last year was 19 dry days, the worst 10

I'd be happy with 27 or 28 this month

will see how i feel next weekend

speaking of logging things

after 2020 when I spent 8k on beer,  continued to track how much I spend drinking at home

2020 - £8.2.k

2021 - £5.6k

2022 - £3.7k

2023 - £0 so far

going in the right direction

I've got a works do on the 18th - might take a day off then. I think the longeest I've got without a drink is 14 days in the last five years so lets see how long this lasts...

I went with a dry jan back in 2016 knowing full well I was going away around the 27th and would be drinking, so lasted until the 22nd (i.e. the friday before)

that's the longest ever since records began for me, would be nice to beat it I guess
