Very true, it is mad that rail transport stops a little after 11pm.

I had a look earlier for my lad who's going to Leeds soon, the leg from Manchester Victoria to Leeds was 55 minutes. Its less than 40 miles away and it takes nearly an hour!

It's  fucking crazy. 2023 and no 24h service in a major UK city. The fact it was easier to travel late on 20 years ago says it all really. No idea how the fuck they get away with it.

Was quicker to get into Manchester from where I live in 1890.

Just means buses run to provide a service rather than make a profit and all buses operate as one 'company' . Similar to TFL do with London buses. I imagine it'll take a while to get anywhere near close to the coverage London has but it's a worthy aim

The buses are still run by private companies, but managed publicly.

Hopefully it will be better once teething troubles are sorted out.

They will still need to make money though, unless they're being subsidised, presumably from council tax. Dunno if this is the case or not.

Lots of shiny new leccy buses though, must be tons better than a smelly diesel.

Former business secretary said all the parties should think about the rail project again as its estimated cost rises to £42.6bn

Jesus, it's going to cost that just to finish the outside of London to outside of Brum stretch!

Quite.

My personal view is that such funds would be better spent on links around the North and improving public transport within cities.

I expect the PM to cancel the Manchester link.

And call it woke.

But GD is right. They should have sorted out local transport first, before looking at shaving 30 mins of a trip down south.

Looks like we’ll get neither

I already posted a link to the east west improvements. To say we're not getting anything is wrong.

Proof of the pudding and all that, but the work is already well underway.

Just had a quick gander. I went down to just outside London on Tuesday, took 4 hours. Same trip on the train is 8.5...

Not read through the tread but if they don't commit, (which as a not clued up average intelligence northerner) then they'll loose whatever votes they have.

You’ll have to stick a bit of meat on the bones there unless it was a 2 hour train to Euston and 6 1/2 hour walk from there?!

I was against HS2 in the first place money should have be spent on connection between manchester to the east and west of the country, connections to the west country and wales from Birmingham and then linking east of the country to the east coast line and beyond to the east of the county, the least priority was the london Birmingham link and it’s an utter disgrace the money spent on that section. Sooner this Tory government is given the last rites the better.

Do you think Starmer will scrap it?

He's voted against it but now complained that it might be scrapped.

It's like brexit: members of both parties want it, whilst members of both don't!

Should the money have been spent on it in the first place? Probably not.

Now it's spades in the ground time should it be finished properly? Yes.

Now the country has already spaffed a small fortune on it to leave it unfinished would be a shit outcome
