Yes exactly, I was always surprised there were doubts that he would be able to fill Trafford's shoes, we were replacing a proven L1 keeper (with great potential), with a proven championship keeper. He was always going to be an upgrade for me, he's more experienced and commanding than Traff was a year ago (no doubt Traff's improving with all the practise he's getting this season!). A great keeper for this level and one position we don't need to strengthen if we go up, fingers crossed for no significant injuries.

January 8, 20242 yr As each month passes by the signing of Baxter looks ever more shrewd. I think the old but enduring virtues of shot-stopping ability and command of the penalty area are the most important of the boxes to be ticked when it comes to looking for keepers. Ability with the ball at the feet is important but secondary. I have a suspicion that sometimes these days keeper signings get made with that equation slightly the wrong way around. Cart before the horse. Baxter has something else that the present day keepers seem to have less than their forebears - positional sense. The amount of times you see goals these days with keepers beaten at their near post. I'm not saying it didn't used to happen, but it seems to happen more now.

He had a shocker that day but then so did the rest
January 8, 20242 yr Must admit l had some early reservations on Baxter. Couple of the Wigan goals, the Reading equaliser from way out did my head in. Happy to be proven wrong. Hope he can stay fit and we extend on his two year deal.

January 9, 20242 yr Don’t think he’s particularly outstanding but he solved a potential problem and is doing fine. I have great confidence in Matt Gilks though, and especially after the job he did on Trafford I’m pretty sure he’ll bring the best out of Baxter. I like it when I don’t have to worry about the goalie.

Silly comparing eras. One was a distinguished Bolton and England top level keeper and the other I like a lot.
