I always remember seeing the famous "Ivan" in his sheepskin at away games in the 80s but never at home games.  Loads in that category, away days were a different set of fans (same now generally).

Oh I promise you Ivan was often present at home games sitting with Paki in the end seats in the Manny Road nearest the Embankment. A right comedy duo.

My main memory of Ivan was his excitement one Saturday afternoon when we were playing Millwall. He must have had a few before the game. A constant stream of amusing insults shouted across to the away end. If only the Millwall following could have heard!

Late to this conversation, but that Notts County was such a clear memory, great to see the footage.  There great excitement going to that game, we'd won at 2nd tier Shrewsbury in the previous round I think, this was 3rd round which was a long cup run for us at the time.  So we took loads, and half of us seemed to be wearing those red, white and blue peaked caps that the club shop were selling.  I had no idea we had 4 goals disallowed, what a freakish night that was in more ways than one.  Rachid Harkouk interview is priceless, I wouldnt like to see him after a defeat, the great days before media training for players.

I'd forgotten about Shrewsbury. Didn't we come back from 2-0 down at theirs and then win it at ours? Not bad given they were Div 2 at the time.

I think we also beat Oldham from Div 2 in the League Cup over two legs during the same period.

Will you be posting any 87/88 game this week Paul?

I was otherwise occupied at the weekend. Next one is Hartlepool 0 Bolton 0 from Boxing Day. I have to make up my mind as to whether to skip that one or trawl through it trying to find some highlights to cobble together!

Looking at Google,  Harkouk was quite a character on and most certainly off the pitch. Less than 2 years later his career would be finished , while playing at the world cup in Mexico 86 for Algeria against Spain he was involved in a challenge with Spanish Hardman Andoni Goikoetxea otherwise known as The Beast of Bilbao that ripped his knee apart . Harkouk blamed the pitch other than Goikoetxea.

Other than the recent drubbings are there many Infamous heavy defeats in our Modern(ish) era . Other than Black Sunday and the Notts County ones?.

QPR 7-1 in the early 80’s. Got tanked at Spurs a couple of times in cup games

Bristol City 6-0 and Reading 7-1 too

Went to that, fucking dreadful even by the standards then. Only highlight was some massively pissed bloke stood at the front, trying to banter with the coppers. "Maggie's (Thatcher) said be lenient on the Bolton fans" etc

So leathered he whipped his old fella out to have a piss where he stood. Ended up pushing the patience too far and got thrown out.

We certainly did for one of the games. Marple wrote to BSA expressing his disgust. Can’t remember if it was the same season

I remember BSA being very unapologetic regarding the Cup games , to him they were basically an hindrance in the early Prem years at least.

Edit- they were in the same season , lost 4-0 in the FAC and lost 6-0 in the LC.

Ivan did plenty homes

He definitely did sheff united as he was running away from em quicker than me

Ha ha!  Yeah I'm sure he did plenty homes, I got the impression it was the "potential trouble" games he did whether home or away.  That Sheff Utd game, I think that was when I started in the Paddock and ended up in the Lever End, to avoid the Sheff U nutters.  To be fair to us, it was a meaningless end of season game and I bet our whole crowd could have fit in the Lever End and they possibly outnumbered us as they were going for promotion (which made victory very enjoyable - Chandler goal etc).  I remember clearing off up Manny Road sharpish to avoid angry Blades fans.

The 2nd round games were still 2 legs then, I remember being 2 down and coming back, but it wasn't a replay it was 2nd leg.  The attendance puts the sense of achievement of the 2-2 into perspective, the crowd of 5,500 was our biggest home crowd before January! (apart from the derby v PNE).  Imagine that now, its not like prices were ever reduced for cup games in them days.

As much as it was a weakened team, it still shouldnt have been conceding 6 - it was far from being kids, more likely this lot was too old! Jussi, Southall, Hendry, N'Gotty, Barness, Farrelly, Johnson, Frandsen, Pederson, Holdsworth, Nishizawa, subs Whitlow, Gardner, Ricketts, Wallace.  Wouldnt mind that line up in any of last 10 years!

Went on a coach from Wogden for that Hartlepool match. Could have been Moggers 🤔. It was one of them games you just had to do. It had no redeeming features about it and you just knew it was going to be shit and cold. It was the I Was There Badge you had to have.

That's the most scared I've ever been at a football match. I'm not surprised Ivan was running. I think even the baying Manny Road police dogs in the vans were frightened that day!
