Something these clips are reminding me of is that JT was top drawer at that level.

Remember him coming in Bromilow Arms after a match once and I was pissed and started singing at him 'Someone scored a goal, John Thomas, Oh Ohh, John Thomas'

He asked Steve the landlord to have a word as it was embarrassing. 😂

We had him in the old Div 2 in the early 80s as well - didn't look out of place. When we got him back in his late 20s and early 30s he looked the business in Div 4 but much less so in Div 3.

Steve Thompson showing on the first what a class act he was becoming too

Very much so. He was thrown in at the deep end by Bolton out of necessity and sometimes struggled. But by 1988 he'd matured a lot and lost that gawky slightly tentative manner of his early days.

Yes I think the game at theirs was a Friday night. We'd drawn 0-0 at home v Scunthorpe not long before and that brought big doubts in to people's minds. In the end Scunny got us promoted with their exploits at Torquay!

It was a Friday and away fans were officially banned

As they were at torquay

I knew about the Torquay one, but not Colchester

Robbie Savage gets our goal at Torquay and it's clear the ban hadn't entirely worked!

I got in at Torquay, as did everyone who went , i think.  There was a lot of assistance from Torquay fans, who had a lot of spare membership cards or whatever it was that you needed.

And we repaid them by burgling promotion off them and pasting them at Wembley 12 months later. As the graffiti on the footbridge over the railway near Moncreiffe Street read:'Bolton 4 Torkey 1' 😉

A trip back to October 1986 and a warm sunny day at Burnden Park. We'd lost six of our first nine games and next up was Notts County. A well taken George Oghani goal gave us the lead but a freak own-goal meant the points were shared. This is, of course, the 1986/87 relegation season.

I remember that goal of George's but couldn't have said who it was against.  He took it really well didn't he? He was a very good striker at that level

He just seemed to lack application - but he had moments where he looked very composed and classy. Made a good career for himself in the lower leagues.

Last one this week - more next. Wolves went up as Champions in the season we were promoted from Div 4. In early October a late John Thomas penalty at Burnden was the only goal of the game and the three points were ours. They hammered us at Wolves in the New Year (a game that wasn't filmed). Here's the JT Pen and the lead up to it. The Wolves fans were banned from travelling away at this time due to their antics on the road. My memory is that a few did turn up and make a fuss in the Burnden Stand - others will no doubt know if there was more serious bother.

Loving these 80s videos.  Memories of us trawling through the lower divisions is helping to steel myself for what might be to come over the next few seasons.

Some of these games are my earliest memories of watching us.  The Rochdale game posted a bit ago was my first away game.  I remember us getting beat by Mansfield in the FRT when I'd convinced myself we would end up playing at Wembley.  I was so pissed off that 5 year old me chucked my scarf away and said I never wanted to watch Bolton again.  I think I went to the next game though.

Some of the games around these times that really stick in my memory for some reason:

We lost to Doncaster 1-0 towards the end of the season we got relegated to Div 4 - I think Neil Redfearn might have scored.  Doncaster played in green I think.  Remember the atmosphere was really grim as everyone knew what was coming.

Remember losing to Port Vale in the cup at home.  I seem to remember Vale bringing loads that day but could be wrong.

6-0 against Newport.

The 3-1 (?) against Burnley in Div 4.  It seemed to young me that there was about 50,000 on.  It was the biggest crowd I'd seen at Burnden at the time after a few seasons of 3 & 4k crowds.

I've got that Doncaster home game. Grim - as you remember! Horrible night. All the results went for us that day and we still couldn't raise our game. Redfearn it was. That Mansfield game is a year too early to have been filmed but I sulked badly after that too. Ian Greaves got one over on us there!

Totally agree. Watching these gems takes away some of the pain  of our current plight.

burnley game was Easter, we won 2-1. Just under 10k on with 3500+ Clarets. They filled their end of burnden terrace and had to have embankment opened to ease congestion.

Nice to see a bit of discipline amongst the ball boys. "Come on, every fucker behind the goal!" :D

There's loads of that Burnley game on you tube - not one of my postings and far more professional a job as a result. Not a good day to be a lazy copper....

A very important goal in Ian Greaves's promotion season of 1977/78. As anybody who is old enough will remember, Tottenham had one season in Division 2 that year and bounced back to the top flight at the first attempt. We finished champions though - and we beat them twice at Burnden in league and FA Cup. This is the goal from the 1-0 league win - a 90th minute winner by Roy Greaves in front of more than 32,000 at Burnden. I actually remember seeing this goal as a child at the time - the Manny Road North stand being the perfect vantage point to see it.

Finally got to see it ..

Donated a tenner !!!

This evening's posting is a match I remember more than anything for being utterly drenched before, after and throughout! An October game  at home to Chester in 86/7 with a gale force wind blowing in over the Embankment and in to the Lever End. One of those occasions when long clearances and goal kicks swirl up and slow in the wind and sometimes even go partially back from whence they came. This was a 1-1 draw - strangely both goals (ours by Steve Elliott) scored in to the teeth of the wind. Horrible conditions to be outdoors - never mind watching and playing football!
