Danny G Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 (edited) The Argies argument is that the Falklands are on their continental shelf, which it is, however that does not give them any right to claim that it is theirs Edited March 7, 2012 by Danny G Quote
MickyD Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 Brazil is also on their continental shelf. They can't lay claim on that either. Unsurprisingly, once again the motivation of the British Govt., as it is in the Middle east conflicts and, doubtless Afganistan (eventually), is oil. Not on the Islands themselves but on Antarctica. A claimant must have a coastline facing the continent of Antarctica to stake a claim on any oil or minerals found there. So I hear. Quote

I agree, The Antarctic is the final frontier when it comes to Black Gold, give it 30 years and it will be full of rigs, IMO Oil and countries energy needs in general are both the direct and indirect causes of the majority of world issues today and its gonna get a lot worse. jayjayoghani Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 The Falklands Islands weren't properly inhabited until the UK started a permanent colony in 1840 So it's a bit rich us saying well the Islanders wish to remain British. They are British. That said, if it pisses off Argentina, I say keep em. Quote

If I was a troop I would like to be on Prince William's ship/plane if it kick's off because that will be safer than going to Millwall away. Quote
Casino Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 if they'd volunteered to join the army, it'd be their lookout would i want 'em getting shot at...probably not but thats what soldiers do can't pick and choose your wars Quote
HuffyTheCampfireSlayer Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 Would you want a member of your family to risk their lives keeping the Falkland's British? Not really but if they join the army they are agreeing to take that risk to protect Britain and its colonies. Would rather see them doing that than fighting america's wars like they are now. As for all these fame whore celebs they are simply falling into the massive pr distraction repeatedly caused by the presidents of Argentina, every time their country collapses they bring up the Falklands to divert their populations attention. Ask the Islanders what they want after all it is technically their land being born and bred there. If they want to live under a British flag then our forces need to defend that. Quote

If it was my son I wouldn't want Cameron using him as cannon fodder in a needless war just to get re-elected and gain popularity. Quote

No. I hate all wars, especially ones that the USA are involved in. Politicians should be able to find an answer to this with negotiation. We will give them Tevez back perhaps as a sweetner? I Quote
DazBob Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 True and I wouldn't expect any soldier to shirk their responsibilities but my question was asked in the context of how you would feel as a Mother/Father/Brother of a soldier. Surely you'd (a.) not want them to join in the first place, but (b.) if they do choose to be a soldier then you accept they've made their own choice to put their life on the line. Regarding your "cannon fodder" comment. Is now any different to when Tony Blair used them as cannon fodder? Quote

I would rather have our troops at home ready for when Germany make another attempt at taking us after the Euro's. Quote
Traf Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 The Falklands would be an expensive place to fight another war. Hold a referendum and if the Islanders want to be British, fine. Start levying them with a War Tax. Quote

MickyD Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 Exactly. Its me and you who will feel it in our back pockets if we had to defend the Falklands again. What I meant to say was; My point earlier was that you won't feel it in your back pocket or any other pocket. Fighting a war doesn't cost us anything over and above what it already costs us. They just rob one pot and put the cash in a war pot. Public service then gets cut because money which would have gone there is now paying for missiles. Quote

Garrp Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 have you any idea how much the UK will make from the oil? Quote
bolty58 Posted March 9, 2012 Posted March 9, 2012 I don't think even the red rags would give up our sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. Massive potential mineral wealth. Must be held at all costs. They wouldn't be able to touch us anyway so it's a non issue. Some backbone required along the lines of the person running the country when Galtieri tried it on. Just a little show of strength (as we have already done) should be all that is required to frighten the Argies off. They should stick Morrissey on South Georgia as an early warning lookout - the treacherous cunt. Quote
