I had to water the artificial bit we've got today, to cool it down so the dogs could go on it, as it was red hot a few minutes ago  - currently showing as 26C at the minute. No chance of rain here, sadly, we could do with some though, I was watering the rest of the garden for well over an hour last night, as Mrs Sweep thought it was a good idea to go and buy a load of new plants this weekend , even though it was sweltering.

I was out on the kayak on the reservoir near me in horwich yesterday and the level is lower than they've ever known it at this time of year.

We seriously need some of this rain all those chemtrail nutters keep promising us.

I've got it in my head that this time of year ie when the kids are firmly locked in schools is usaully good weather (like 2nd week of September onwards).

The rain will come in time for half-term, though.

The key here is to shorten school holidays, take some of the 16 weeks teacher holidays back and get some good weather.

I always reckon we should move summer holidays earlier like in Scotland. To be fair this is based on nothing apart from the probably misremembered weather during Bolton Holidays where it always seemed to be 800 degrees every day for two weeks, each year without fail.

We had some decent rainfall overnight here so not watered the lawn today. Everything is early summer popping, really verdant and loads of the things we planted in early March just about to flower.

Looking at lightning maps, there has been a fair number of storms along the m40 corridor, and into Shropshire and Wales.

Have you had any more?

Cheshire had a bit, as has scouseland, but nothing so far here.

There has been a bit near Derby, so hopefully it will track this way.

Had a read before, and it seems the southeast of the uk gets most thunderstorms.

Gets less as you track northwest.

Some slight change to that pattern in recent years but nothing of huge note.

Not today, I think it had moved over to London overnight. Quite heavy weather though- sunny all day and now the clouds have moved in.

Radishes are being harvested, although being a novice I planted them and the carrots too close together! Will make amends on my second seeding.

Use radishes between rows of crops that take longer-like spuds.

Harvest them before spuds are ready.

For the first time ever, I've had proper success with spinach- always had difficulties with germination and subsequent development. Seems the secret is some sand in the soil.

Pak choi and lettuces ready now.

Beans and peas well on their way.

Time to sow some more I reckon.

Will take note. Peas are in and tomatoes are coming on quite nicely. Nasturtiums are going wild - love them in a salad.

Not tried them- peppery aren't they?

Wild garlic coming to the end now, but another good year for it. Great stuff.

Yeah - and the kids have always liked the novelty of picking edible flowers - super easy to grow. I did them from seeds in pots in March but whacked a load more directly into the beds in late April as we don't get frosts here from then on in generally and they are growing brilliantly already. A beginners plant as my Dad says. Makes salads look nice as well and they self seed for the following year.
