Mental how the appetite changed in the matter of 5 or so years.

Swindon you couldn’t move at burnden and it was electric.

5 years later we barely fill half the ground and nobody gives a fuck.

10,046 on for the league match v Swindon the same season,  lower than every league crowd in 21 years at the Reebok ?

How close was Liverpool under lennon to a sell out?

Only 22k on, including an away sell-out and Reds in home areas.

Bury play off game think just under 20k at burnden as someone mentioned and from memory a fraction of that for the home league game that season? Shall check and revert unless someone knows?

13k for the Tranmere one :(

I realise it came across as mocking Burys attendance and that wasn't my intention. If we have the same game next year we'll do well to get 5k, I know I wouldn't be there as a protest at what they've done to that cup. It's more of a comment on how the excitement generated for smaller clubs pre premier era just isn't there now, for 90% of clubs.

Weirdly the Tranmere league cup crowd was bang average our Championship crowd for that season circa 13-14k

The Villa semi crowd was 10 thou below our league average ironically one of our best attended home seasons.

Not sure what any of this proves although the Villa crowd was pisspoor

Obviously lots of factors but biggest 1 for me is all seater stadiums results in more season tickets sold, as we like to book seats to guarantee sitting together. Consequently most of us attend more league games than we otherwise would, we've all dragged ourselves to games coz we've already paid. Cup games come along and its "what, there's ANOTHER game? And you want me to PAY?" 20 years ago fans would miss a league game and save themselves for the cup, now the cup is a break.

Not defending the crowd but both our semi finals were 1st legs. They always feel a bit flat compared to the 2nd leg, e.g. v Bury in play off we got 4k more than Notts County a year or 2 earlier and the away followings were similar. If we had been in play offs under Parky in Div 1 with 1st leg at home and Ken had gone all Cat A on us the crowd would have been pitiful.

Am I right in my recollections that the semi-final (both legs) were live on telly? Or have I remembered a reason for the low attendance that wasn't actually there?

Probably best indicated by the difference between the lowest and highest crowds in the early 90s whereas as we’ve found out recently there’s always a relatively high starting point for league attendances these days purely because of the volume of season tickets.

I wouldn't necessarily put it down to all-seaters by the way as the culture is identical in rugby league with the vast majority of league crowds being season ticket holders, even clubs with terracing, and the subsequent drop off for cup games. Probably more to do with the saving offered by having a season ticket versus paying game by game, plus the Direct Debit options and the like.

There was a definite malaise around the club during the times of those semi finals against Tranmere.  We'd been relegated, couldn't get back up and Todd and Frandsen hadn't long since left.

Allardyce was still finding his way at the time too - "you don't know what you're doing" rang out in the cup at Cambridge iirc.

Beautiful to think though, that within a few years, Aldridge was out of work, we were an established Premier league side and those Birkenhead tossers were galloping towards the conference.

Aye, was at that game and whilst one nil down at half time I don't recall it being a shambles or anything and we won comfortably in the end

That said it was 17 years ago and I can't remember what I had for tea last night
