Charlton scored the exact same amount of goals as us this season the difference being there defence as been far more solid and there good at nullifying the opposition which they did today and against us twice . SS did mention about changing tactics depending on the opposition Oxford did the same  thing against us .

The error, that the keeper was fouled, was made during live play. The error was not disallowed a goal (which went in after the whistle) so VAR, about the foul, would be entirely legitimate.

Just more grist to the whole VAR discussion tbh.

The ref was too keen to blow his whistle, the play should have been allowed to unfold and then a decision made, like they do with offsides, possible penalties and all goals. etc

A Villa goal at that point of the game (72 mins) makes them highly likely to get at least a point and a place in the Champions League. A referee's decision has cost them millions. 

You either use VAR consistently or get rid.

Danny Kelly has it right. Football needs to shout louder. They'll have to listen at some point.

We are now the biggest fish in this division with the biggest crowd and a decent budget.

A new manager, a new ethos and hopefully new playing style. 

There's plenty to be hopeful about. We will be up there punching I'm certain of it.

The inconsistency is in the leeway logic. For example the justification for linesmen waiting ages before flagging for an offside is given as “allowing play to develop to see what happens” - similarly refs often allow play to continue after a foul and then give it later. Both are cases of a considered decision.

But if a ref makes a hasty decision there has to be leeway to allow common sense to prevail rather than a rule which in essence admits to poor officiating. In some cases, players may stop when they hear the whistle so it affects play - but in this case it had no effect and refs should have the option to make the correct and fair decision.

VAR film is very useful information to help refs make the right decision so why not grant refs access whenever they are uncertain or the monitors think he has missed something? There are too many daft rules around it which could be scrapped to simplify it - after all, it’s the refs final decision anyway and VAR is just info to help him arrive at the correct one.

Luton, Plymouth and Cardiff like to think they are big fish and most of the rest will fancy their chances.

Big fish or not, a lot of it is down to the manager.  The 2024 version of Evatt was in stark contrast to Bloomfield at Wycombe (before he left), Wellens at Orient, Challinor at Stockport, Jones at Charlton etc.

Being a big fish definitely means a lot of clubs raise their game when they play us especially at our stadium, one of the benefits of getting back to the championship would be less teams treating us like a big day out.

I feel a bit for the ref here.

We hear fans and pundits saying refs should blow earlier on clear incidents, to help prevent injuries. 

In this instance, I think the ref felt that a clear foul had been committed, so blew up.

From the distance away he was, you can understand why he thought it was a foul.

I doubt for one moment he saw any reason to allow the game to proceed.

Rightly or wrongly, I can understand why he blew up.

The letter by Villa is disappointing. 

Making suggestions about a referee's ability, as if their players etc don't make errors.

Their goal keeper made a terrible challenge to get himself sent off.

Yep.

It will ultimately come down to if the players are good enough.

Hope better recruitment solves that.

And fit enough.  Ridiculous how often our players get injured, even Morley who isn't "injury prone" would have missed all of the play offs if we'd been in them. Misfortune plays a big part, hopefully its our turn to be relatively lucky on that front.

If a referee waited to make a decision every time he felt there was a foul, we'd be fucked.

He called it as he sees it, and Villa complaining the way they did is ott.
