He was a free market capitalist - just like (as has been pointed out before) every other western political leader since the 1980's onwards.

Some info on relative spend compared to GDP here. So unless you're claiming Thatcher was a Socialist, which is why she was 'throwing money around' at the beginning of her premiership at Brownesque rates - then your argument falls down.

To be fair it is difficult to compare one or even two terms by any party depending on the economic and political situation they find themselves in.

Brown hid billions on PFI which is another good idea gone to rat shit. He as chancellor then PM oversaw record tax receipts yet still never reduced the deficit.

Hindsight and all that means you have to cut some slack especially as the Tories were offering similar spending in the hope of getting elected.

What he did was create an underclass with an expectation of entitlement that we have never experienced before. I know, I have family that have grown up expecting it and they make my blood boil.

I would say his "educated" decision (as Chancellor) to sell off half of the country's entire gold reserve whilst gold was at a very low price wasn't his best move.

I have no doubt that these decisions either work, in which case you are a winner, or they don't, in which case you're a loser. Brown was a massive loser. And regarding Frank's point that he was just the signatory for the sale, yes, he was, and the buck stopped there. He'd have expected the plaudits had things gone well. He can't, therefore, not accept the criticism when things didn't go well.
