Ah, ok. It's just that the conversation is about guns, so I made an assumption that you were also talking about guns. Still, your explanation doesn't really make sense. Why can't you get a licence? What does "Family (most weapons)" mean?

You said the reason most people don't own a gun (sorry 'weapon') in the UK is because they aren't allowed to. Which is incorrect. Never mind.

I watched a video on Facebook this morning of a bloke in the US sawing his own automatic rifle in half. He spent about 5 minutes talking about how he was a legal gun owner - but also made the argument that so were the people who slaughtered those schoolkids the other day or the Las Vegas shooter. He couldn't live with the idea that his gun could inflict that kind of damage - so he'd taken it upon himself to decommission it.

 

Maybe that's the answer. Make it about taking personal responsibility rather than asking the state to do it for you. Might be more palatable to most gun nuts that way?

Then have a staggered series of dates where certain types of gun become illegal to own, starting with the ridiculous outside of the military fully automatic stuff and ending with hand guns.

Self defence arguments are entirely flawed. Look at the number of unnecessary deaths caused by "self defence". More guns makes things more not less dangerous.

Gonzo I don't think you can have an amendment of an amendment, you can have a new ones, you have to woke around the existing amendment and that was Washington was trying to say about the constitution being a living document and as time moves on and times change then you change the law "but" the amendment still stands as the frame work you have to work within, so the "right to bear arms is a bit hard to get around", now the right to bear certain arms you can do something about (like Clinton did), but you can bet any money you want that anything they try will end up in front of the supreme court.

Could you class Prohibition as an amendment on an amendment??

Yes you can. The 18th Amendment enacted prohibition of alcohol, yet last time I was in the States I got pissed perfectly legally. The 21st Amendment reversed the 18th.

not saying it is, and agree that more guns are more dangerous, merely raising the point that self destruction of guns would only be done by the good guys really.

the fact they are freely available and the fact bad guys will have them means that good guys want to own them and can own them as they see it as the only way they can protect themselves from the bad guys with guns. thats the dilemma.

im not saying it is correct, just how the prevailing attitude there  is, as i see it.

A little bit flawed because whilst you can't buy an off-the-shelf fully automatic rifle, you can buy a semi-automatic and add-ons which make it fully automatic.

 

My guess is that if a gun shop is allowed to sell the semi-automatic and the modifying add-on then it sells you a fully automatic rifle.
