New avatar is the only pic I've ever found from the replay at St James's Park same here, spent most of the game on my dad's shoulders so I could see, macdonald scored 2 fantastic goals that day. Quote
wanderers63 Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 40 years ago tomorrow? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1GF5arqwqo brought a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes I remember it well.i was 13 and I nearly got crushed in the lever end when Paul Jones scored that equaliser great memories thanks for posting Quote
Nobster Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 BEN billed it as the st Valentine's Day massacre part 2, it was the best atmosphere I can remember. I went to all 3 games we were just knocked in the 2nd replay at Elland Road. Quote
Tony Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 I was so excited about the game I caught the bus down to town at 11.00. I was only 16 and didn't pubs at that time. I was stood at bus station waiting for my mate when five very rough looking Geordies came up behind. They said don't worry they just wanted to know where there could do some robbing in Bolton. I went into the ground as soon as the gates where open I think it was about 1.00. Fantastic crowd and a great game. Didn't go to Newcastle but the game at Elland Road was pretty good as well. Quote
bgoefc Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 (edited) I saw 2.5 games. Our coach was stuck in the tailback on the M621. We eventually got off and walked and only got to the ground just before HT and the cunts would not let us in. Saw the last 20 mins when the gates opened. We mullered em at St James park but couldn't score. Edited February 13, 2016 by bgoefc Quote
Barnstoneworth White Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Where's that 40 years gone? I was 11 at the time. Caught the bus in Farnworth with my dad at 12 ish. You could see that every pub en route was packed mainly with Geordies. Got in the Manny Road South as soon as the gates opened and managed to get right beside the tunnel perched on a TV scaffold. Got a few autographs, Alan Gowling, Geoff McNulty, Paul Jones, the ones I remember. Will never forget the massive crowd and the sadness and amazement at the same time when McDonald scored that screamer. Quote
freds dad Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 I caught the bus from Farnworth with my mates and was in the Lever End on the day in my usual spot. It was a great atmosphere and absolutley heaving. There were Geordies everywhere outside the ground and they all seemed pissed. After the match we walked back to Kearsley as all the buses were packed. Quote
Mounts Kipper Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 (edited) 42 bus from Hill Top or (Toppings Bridge) as it was known back then the fair was 2p???? I was a Lever Ender in those days, can't remember the game that well, just the incredible crackling atmosphere and noise. Brilliant times. Edited February 13, 2016 by Mounts Kipper Quote
RONNIE PHILLIPS Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Always makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck watching that, the young uns today will never feel the electric atmosphere of those days. Quote
RUREADY2ROLL Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Was in the lever end and it was an amazing atmosphere Didn't go to the first reply but went to the 2nd at Leeds; roads where blocked because of a major water leak but made it in just after kick off. We were unlucky to lose 2-1 Quote

Boby Brno Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Great, great days those. Just 2 months after the Sunderland match. I really thought that we would have crowds like that every week when we were promoted. A couple of things Spring to mind. I took a photo of Garry Jones to a hairdresser in Manchester the previous October on my 21st and said "cut it like that" If I'm not mistaken, our Chairman at the time (John Banks I think) Collapsed and died in the stands when PJ scored the equaliser. Tried to google it but no results. Quote
Casino Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 a fella called paul cannell played in the second replay one of gowling and macdonald was out injured, which was expected to increase our chances didnt go to the first replay but avoided the score to watch it on sportsnight remember them making a big thing of siddall catching high balls with his foot high Quote

Boby Brno Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Pat Howard, who played for Newcastle that day, ran a school of excellence that was associated with Man U. My eldest son played for them and was involved in a few matches against other league clubs wearing the full United kit. He won't thank me for posting this and I still love him.???? Quote
Burndens Bogs Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 Was that a youg Peter Reid in the build up to our equaliser at Burnden, number 10? Quote
