July 5, 20251 yr We have no choice but to gamble if we want Championship standard players to get us promoted on a League 1 budget. Players with “baggage” are affordable. Notable that a lot of our signings are youngish with development potential.

Quite right lusty and one or two may not pay off but if a couple do turn out to be good then that’s all we can realistically ask. We paid serious money last year for players none of who have so far proved successful. Maybe one or two of them will this time around in a more physical and attacking team? We can only hope so.

And it's no dig at you aldo but the number of times we read 'never heard of him' etc, well no course you've never heard of him, we are in division 3, are folk still expecting us to sign household names ? How many of the upcoming opponents players could people name without the aid of the teamsheet before the game. Very much a case of 'trusting the process' It's not because I've not heard of them or they aren't household names, though I'm making an observation at first glance and nothing more I'd be as delighted as the next man if it turns out we've signed some good'uns

Any transfer has an element of risk, but they do their homework in detail. Some aspects surprised me, but it did make complete sense. I would also imagine that the scouting and analysis work is done in a similar fashion by many clubs. I can’t see any way any of our scouts have actually seen this guy play live in the short spell ss as Been at the club and decided he wanted a winger and get the new set up in place . So I am thinking it may be a player fergal had previously had good feed back From The scouts at standard in Belgium and one they were watching closely . think that’s more probable than a big gamble on 4 year deal and injuries reportedly 600k deal going off data and watching games online which SS mentioned on the podcast to narrow targets down Edited July 5, 20251 yr by Farnywhite

However, he’s losing his pace and combined with being in a team that’s going to be under serious pressure defensively, he might get really shown up compared to the levels he’s been at.

Law of averages says SS won't be here in a couple of years and we know how hard it is to move players on when the new manager wants to sign his own men. Or another scenario is we manage to get promoted and want to sign better for the championship. I'd be interested to know if it was us insisting he signs for 4 years, or we've gone in offering 2 or 3 as seems normal, and they've said "we're only signing if we get 4 years". And we've taken that gamble.
July 5, 20251 yr Alternatively, 4 years gets you 2 years to get some use out of em then sell when value is at its highest

Signing a 2 year deal at a Prem team, in the North West where he lives, isn't exactly a hardship. He's not signed for Stockport, he'll be getting millions in 2 years. And the 2nd year of it will be in the championship so he won't be shown up as much!

Some of the young signings could develop into £multimillion assets at which point some folk would be pissed off if wasn’t a four year deal.
