We've just won promotion using a gaggle of players nobody else wanted, littered with injury plagued loanees and players that were cast as cart horses, one trick ponies and generally weak as piss.

  • Like when we went up from league 2, we needed tried and tested players from that specific division/level to deal with the task in hand. Doyle and Sarcs etc. We need exactly the same in this divis

Barnsley also have the type of striker who's probably retiring soon.

No shit.

Aye.

Third division club in taking a chance on an experienced, but older, player to help get them promoted shocker!

We seem to be going the other way with signings, which is fair enough, but whatever method the promoted teams employ, they'll not be moaning about it.

I'd have hoped we found out you can't rely on loans. but with Evatts purchases, we can't rely on them either...

Collins, Schon, McAtee, Randall all 1m ish.. would be have been better off with a seasoned vet or loanee?

James McLean, Dwight Gayle, Ashley Fletcher, Barry Bannan...

I'd say an experienced pro at this level works tremendously.

Just had a look on the transfermarkt.

Danny Ings seems to be currently without a club.

33 years old- worth a punt?

Very, very much if he'd lower himself to our level.

Aye.

More of a point that there are older, experienced guys out there.

Clearly, we have set out to bring in young players, with a point to prove, and that's fine.

I wouldn't mind seeing someone of this ilk though, who could bring proven ability, and experience to help on and off the field.

SS did comment early doors that we didn't have many players over 30 as well as few youngsters coming through.

A bit of nous, just to top off the enthusiasm, and raw talent of the new recruits.

I'd have to dig back a bit but recall SS saying in an Iles piece early in Summer that he thought our age profile was too middling, too many in the same mid-late 20s bracket, not enough youthful vigour or experienced nouse.

The youthful bit has certainly been addressed but we've done nothing noticeable at the older end

Aren’t those the type of players we get in the last few days of the window, when they don’t get the Championship offer they’d hoped for?

Yep, they could well be, time yet

He did.

But he also said there was no one over 30, except Sheehan.

Yes, that was it, that we lacked youth but also an older head or two.

ALF 6th then.  Klasnic, John Thomas, Gudjonsen, in no order.

Id have that.

McGinlay is the best goal scorer we've ever had.

Not as much finesse as Walker and others but right place right time.

And as good as Walker was on the ground, McGinlay had more devilment and fearlessness with his finishing in the air, he scored a bigger variety of goals.  For a smallish player, the number of headers he scored was ridiculous (just from memory, not looked at any stats).  ALF probably the only one to come close in my time - small player scoring headers regularly.

I loved Klasnic so he's definitely in top ten and I guess ALF too

Never really thought of Gudjonsen as a striker, though he scored plenty, more a creative number 10

JT before my time and also for some reason a term for a penis so can't take him seriously

Walker would never have scored goals like McGinley did v Boro (in the PL) or away at Wolves in 96/97

But McGinley never bore down on goal one on one and slotted it away every time

They were the perfect combo

Though Blake and McGinley were more perfect

Loved watching Blake strong as a ox

We all have our favourites but surely Anelka is objectively the best

Only a young Gudjohnsen gets even close

Depends how far you go back. You could include Whatmore, Jones, Taylor and Byrom. I’m slightly too young to include Lee and of course Nat. I loved Mcginlay but always thought not enough pace to make it at the very top.

Add these names to the above and probably some that have been missed in over sixty years of passed time. It just goes to show how rare quality goal scorers are. Maybe there is one lurking in our juniors somewhere.

Lee was great, but he truly blossomed after he left us.

Wyn Davies. Goodness me he was good.

Worthy, a tremendously skilled player.

Byrom, Walker, McGinley, Klasnic, Whatmore.

Gudjonsson was tremendous but for sheer, pure class it has to be Anelka.

Franny scored 92 goals for us in 189 games and 112 in 249 for City. He definitely blossomed with us. City bought the finished product.
