We've just won promotion using a gaggle of players nobody else wanted, littered with injury plagued loanees and players that were cast as cart horses, one trick ponies and generally weak as piss.

  • Like when we went up from league 2, we needed tried and tested players from that specific division/level to deal with the task in hand. Doyle and Sarcs etc. We need exactly the same in this divis

You're mixing seasons up

SJM was top scorer in our first PL season in 95/96 with 6

Beardsley joined in 97/98, when SJM left Bradford and Blake was top scorer with 12

Right , mind playing tricks again . False memories are so strange .

Best will in the world, being top scorer is perhaps misleading as to the team's performance overall.

I can clearly remember him being beasted by Southgate and thinking it has just come too late.

Still a legend though.

Yeah it was a poor season . At least he can say he played in the top flight. Wasnt there a stat that if matches were 75 mins long we would have finished 9th and if 85 mins long we would have finiashed 6th or something similar.

Yes IIRC we conceded a lot of late goals in that first PL season. We'd have a fair amount of possession but it would often come to nought against much more clinical finishing. It was soul destroying watching us compete in a game only to suffer a sucker punch right at the end

been said before, but something like, if all matches that season ended on 80 or 85 mins we stayed up

this was back in the 90s when you couldn't easily check, so just took folks word for it

edit: just seen @Krimzon say the same thing

We also had a similar problem under Allardyve iirc

I do remember a period where we'd concede late goals soooo often. Really frustrating.

Happened against Blackburn and United annoyingly too often

That one just after Sir Les scored was the biggest kick in the nuts.

Any news on a new striker? Would be good to get some latest updates from anywhere.

The last 500 comments should've put under a new heading 'Memory Lane'

Until we move a few out I doubt there’s anybody new coming in striker or otherwise.

I got all giddy when I saw we'd signed a striker from Watford. I'd never heard of him like. Ade somebody.  Turns out it was a lass for the women's team.

I've lost count of the number of times I've read that Arsenal have swooped to sign Liverpool's top scorer or Man U have smashed their record transfer fee for a Spanish striker.  And its nothing of the sort.

This is the reason my tv is covered with tea-bag splatter.

Still feel the pain..

Always had it down as 26 points we lost.

I think we’ve exhausted this thread for the moment but I’m still hopeful we’ll see a bit more action in both directions as the window winds down.
Rumours seem to have stopped for now though.

We need a right back, centre back who has pace and a CF who does score goals (I know it was only 15 minutes but that Dalby didn’t look good)

This idea of a centre back with pace. We've conceded 4 in 4. Only 1 of those was from a forward getting away from our defenders and, even in that case, it was less about pace and more about Toal switching off. I genuinely can't recall a single instance in any League Game where our central defenders have been outstripped for pace. Correct me if i am wrong.

As for Dalby, i thought he looked very promising. A lot of physicality, held it up a couple of times and brought wide players into play. He made a mistake with his lay off to McAtee but he'll be good for us when fit i think. We have a CF who has scored 2 in 4 as well. So you could argue we already have the player you want!

Our centre forward scored last night.

Reckon he'd get more too, if the service was quicker and more regular.

Desperately need someone better behind him though.

Hepburn Murphy last year v Crawley. Still, I agree with you, central defence isn't an issue

Sorry. Was just referring to this season. But he did you’re right.

There were a couple of times last night when we did get the ball in their box but nobody could get on to it but I reckon Dalby would have been in there like a wrecking ball and smashing it in. He’ll be a danger at corners and set pieces, but he came on when we were mainly on the defensive.

Although Reading created nothing, give them some credit for defending their box. They worked their balls off.

Whoops, wrong topic.
