We've just won promotion using a gaggle of players nobody else wanted, littered with injury plagued loanees and players that were cast as cart horses, one trick ponies and generally weak as piss.

  • Like when we went up from league 2, we needed tried and tested players from that specific division/level to deal with the task in hand. Doyle and Sarcs etc. We need exactly the same in this divis

How many Belgians then? That winger on loan from Stoke under Keith Hill. Name began with V. Dedryk Boyata. De Ridder. Not able to think of any others.

In my mind he was good. But I can't remember anything about him or what he even looked like :D

Much the same as Max Clayton.

This is not a quiz question because I am not sure I know the answer: How many Dutch players have we had on our books in our history now? Richard Sneekes, Fabian De-Freitas (or did he count as Surinamese?), Riga (played for Holland at all the different youth levels but born in Ghana). I am struggling a bit now. Any others?

.. Oh, Yanic Wildschut!

De Freitas was born in Suriname as remember having to look up where it was

May have grown up in Holland though

Isn’t this how World War One started?

He did I think. Loads of Surinamese in Holland.

He broke our transfer record when we signed him for £400,000. It had stood for 15 years since we signed Len Cantello from WBA for £350,000 in 1979, which turned out not to the finest moment for Ian Greaves.

That goal v Reading but a bad ROI on £400k

He was not a massive success but he did get a few more goals. One soon after promotion at home to Blackburn sticks in the mind. We beat them 2-1 in the pissing rain at Burnden. They were champions, we were newly promoted. Sent the dingles back home sulking.

It looks like the Charlton smokescreen has been removed now. Time to announce Kenny Jonny…….

Stubbs scored the winner and in his post match interview when asked about leaving said "watch this space" because he was certain he was off to Blackburn

I'm also Facebook friends with DeFraitas even though we've never met

I'm sure I was connected with him in LinkedIn in too and he was an architect these days but can't find him

I like his list of jobs

That was their last visit to Burnden, and we beat them on their first visit to the Reebok too (Holdsworth 1-0) those were strange times because them being champions/challenging for Europe etc diluted our rivalry a bit, playing us to them was a small game as they had bigger fish to fry.  Beating them was very satisfying to remind them we were still around.

Yes we'd just beaten the champions and all the post match chat was about Stubbs leaving, and McAteer too IIRC

Was that when Stubbs gave a MotD interview where he basically said he wasn't planning on staying ?

Sorry, just seen the above posts.

Answer "yes".

Reading aside - Fab's best goal for us.

Have we ever had anyone born in Up Holland though??

Aye

Blackburn wanted both of them so put in a double bid

When the bid came in Stubbs thought he was off

But Mcateer didn't want to go to Blackburn knowing there was a chance of Liverpool, and kept quiet

When McAteer turned Blackburn down they withdrew their offer for both

Dunno why, but that's how I recall it

Meant Stubbs was stuck with us for the season

It was the smirk on his face when he said it that still irks me the cocky git.

He scored the equaliser and the winner in a game that brought the club millions of pounds, spectacular return on investment. Seem to remember he played a game against Swindon(?) earlier in the season when I thought he looked unplayable, ripped them apart. Didn't score many in the season but that Wembley performance more than pays back the outlay.

One of my favourite games that. Proper David v Goliath shit
