Ambition! Bigger club, bigger crowds, better stadium, better training facilities, and no reason we can’t pay bigger wages than Barnsley.

Yes but it is marginal. As things stand we will both be challenging for automatic promotion from L1 next season and are likely to offer a similar salary. Bolton and Barnsley are fairly similar so the bigger club thing is based on history and is not relevant.

That’s your opinion, my opinion is that Barnsley can’t hold a candle to BWFC.

Of course but your judgement is with your heart not your head.

Barnsley struggled to muster 20k for a play of final. The whole set up there is tiny compared to Bolton.

Nonsense my friend. At the time it was a very good deal for us and him.

He would be a massive upgrade on Sheehan , would have him back in a heart beat. He was a knob in the cup game at ours but as admitted as much.

The big club/small club debate is one I normally cringe at, but the notion that Barnsley, fucking Barnsley, are in anyway comparable to Bolton is frankly laughable.

Connell deserved every bit of abuse he got for the cuntish way he left the club & his cuntish behaviour at the home game.

Whether he's grown up a bit or , more likely, someone brighter had a quiet word with him, he treated our club & fans with respect after both play off games so that's the end of it for me, i'll just ignore him now 😊. A decent player but i wouldn't have him back.

Bolton is bigger but overall the clubs have very similar standing these days.  They have finished above us about 7 out of the last 10 seasons. Going back to the original post, why would their better players come to Bolton which is a sideways move ?

Attendance comparisons are not the only measure. We are far better supported than Burnley and always have been but they will be playing in the premier league again next season.

The fans relationship with ex players is always a bit warped depending on views about perceptions of whether they did us over or dissed us after they left or still love us.  E.g Stubbs, Reid, McAteer, Le Fondre, Dapo etc.

Connell left a few weeks after his 18th birthday so still a child when discussions with Celtic were probablyunderway.  He didn't sign for Wigan but a huge club, who were the ones (not Connell) who appeared to do us over on the fee we expected.  We were skint.  No doubt his representatives played their part in that, but that's what they are there for.  Less transfer fee = bigger contract.

He did react to the abuse he got here last autumn but his public views have been far more conciliatory recently.  Decent player but unlikely to come back and given his woeful shot yesterday not likely to improve our scoring record.

Because of the potential and ambition. It is undeniable that our trajectory is upwards. A bigger club should have potential to pay better wages etc

I have more sympathy for the argument they won't come to Bolton as they will have interest from Championship.

Your say we are a bigger club , but currently on  similar standings so the Burnley comparison as you know is a different situation. They played at Bolton 3 times last year, do you honestly think their players would not be impressed with the facilities compared to Oakwell  which is only partially opened as the stands are dangerous ?

I doubt that as there was no-one still here from that time last summer

I'm not sure he did very much wrong really

We didn't have him signed to a profesional contract and weren't in a position to offer him one

A big club came calling and he left, with that club paying training compensation when they could've opted not to

As a proportion of the population, Burnley are one of the best supported clubs in the country

Their average gate is 14.5k (with apparently significantly higher prices) ours is 19k. We might be bigger, but they're hardly 'tiny' compared to us.

Does anyone think we're tiny compared to Derby County and expect that our all good players really want to go and play for them?

Of course but right now Barnsley and Bolton are similarly placed for upwards trajectory next season and our wages will probably be similar. So whilst I agree that we are definitely on the up and Bolton have more potential I cannot see their big players coming to us this Summer.

Correct. Barnsley have spent most of their recent history in the championship (13 out of the last 17 seasons) and are usually very successful in getting back there from L1.

When Connell left we were a club in crisis, we'd had a fire sale of our youngsters, we were not paying players, let alone our debts. Any young 3rd division player would be taken with Celtic knocking on their door.

He left without much class, but aged 18 or so that's as much down to his agent than him.

We're not, collectively, patient with players we decide aren't cutting it so can barely whinge when one exits on his own steam.

I was impressed with him 10 days sho. We all agree we need a strong midfield player who can bully the opposition. If he was still ours I'd be pleased.

Given where we've ended up, with a fanbase united around popular new owners and manager, Connell is probably the biggest lasting disappointment of the admin years. He would've been perfect for the level we're at and we could've had a lad who'd been at the club since was 10 on 200+ games and well on his way to becoming a club legend.

Nobody really to blame outside of maybe Ken Anderson, but a shame nonetheless. For his part, I think he's shown far more class to Bolton fans than has been shown to him.

But but but he looked like he was trying too hard when he played against us...

Not sure why some of our fans covet him so much, we need better players than him.

Well Declan Rice seems keen to move North. Fck Santos off & bring Holden and Nat Phillips back I reckon. Chris Woods will be spare once Newcastle Arabia get spending.

Just a keeper & right wing back to get & I reckon we're sorted.

Barnsley had 8/9 games last season with under 10k on. We have not dropped below 10k since pre pandemic.
Their ground that they lease  is literally falling apart https://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/sport/football/east-stand-temporary-closure-highlights-need-to-resolve-oakwell-lease-issue-stress-barnsley-fc-supporters-trust-4053329

I have no problems with Barnsley as a club but we are simply a more attractive proposition for a player than they are.

BTW the biggest factors that might make players move will be wages and length of contract .

I doubt we will sign him but he would be an excellent addition to the first team . I am hoping in the summer we are looking at first team leaders rather than general squad players.  For me he fits that bill.

I really do not get the idea that the way he left us was in any way dodgy. Young lad with no professional contract at a club that was potentially going out of business would have been crazy to stay.

He didn't kick a ball for Celtic & was playing in some Scottish Sunday league with Ronan Darcy on mud pits so it would have been hard to gauge what standard he was still at after a few years of his development were spent playing at a rubbish standard. In hindsight it was a risk worth taking on a free but it was easy to think our midfield was one of the most technical already having Morley/Demps/Sheehan/Lee going into this season. I think for our midfield we want one of Morley/Sheehan starting (Not both) as they both want to do the same job from deep, Demps for his drive/energy & one of our main targets this summer should be trying to find a proper fit for the attacking midfield role because Dapo didn't work there... Shola didn't work there... we need somebody who's game is to support the front two but also enjoys getting shots off a bit like Twine for MK last season & Chaplin for Ips this season. When we're trying to break teams down, looking devoid of any ideas that's where that kind of player can grab you a goal from just having a shot & our midfielders did say Evo was telling them to shoot more from just outside the box.
