I fear its like Corbyn that Sanders for example knows he can't win but just want to dictate the direction of the democrats.

There's a big difference between being intelligent and appealing to a base that Trump has spent his presidency cultivating. In fact it's the polar opposite. The brighter you appear - the more a Trump supporter is going to view you with suspicion. They go for the 'strong man' thing.

There is - but then why not play to the crowd? I'm not saying out Trump, Trump - but you know show some electoral know-how. Corbyn wasn't that bright - and that's why he didn't. But I think likes of Sandars are but they're positioning themselves for a crushing at the ballot box. And we know it - so surely they must too? Sanders can articulate himself a lot better than JC ever could. And he's much more charismatic - so he's a better chance of making an impression. Although I think Trump is pretty much unplayable. How do you win against someone who's main counter argument is telling everybody how great he is and giving you a stupid nickname?

How do you win against someone who's main counter argument is telling everybody how great he is and giving you a stupid nickname? How do you win? You expose it. And put a credible alternative forward. The people who voted him in (the crucial votes) aren't Trump loyalists - or mad enough to think he's the answer but they need a better answer to their problems. If that answer only resides in intellectuals speaking to each other and engaging only with the highly engaged and youth vote - well see what happens. Corbyn's Labour did not speak once to middle England to those struggling in work to make ends meet - it spoke to the 5% poorest in society (who rarely vote) and inner city middle class people who would like to help the homeless man they walk past on their way to the office everyday without needing to get their hands dirty. But what did he say to a family on say £40K a year with 3 kids just about surviving? The people who vote...he said nothing - his messaging missed them entirely. And Sandars is the same. You have to engage the electorate that matter.

One of my main issues with Corbyn was that he never really articulated to people what the future could look like in the UK with a socialist agenda. And the benefits that might bring for everybody. I reckon BS could have a better stab at it. Still doubt it will work - most people won't listen for long enough to set the ideas out. Heard a bit of a discussion on the merits of the democrat candidates. Think it was Sanders they were referring to - calls himself socialist, but isn't really (so they said). For me, labelling some of these people one way or another pigeonholes them too much. Some are clearly driven by an ideology, like Corbyn, but many will have beliefs that are a mixed bag. Up to us to decide which is best.

I'd say comparatively and relative to the positions in each country, Sandars is way more socialist than Corbyn - at least in his policy platform. https://www.politico.com/2020-election/candidates-views-on-the-issues/bernie-sanders/
