Prob worth its own thread but inflation/interest rates

First, tories claiming their efforts are bringing inflation down

My view was that inflation would have fallen significantly just by some of the 'ukraine peaks' dropping out

Second, just heard on the radio what i thought was a fair point. This clunky tool of interest rate rises is battering the younger folk with mortgages, while older richer folk are largely unaffected

Tell me, Im wrong?

They’re alright, Jack.

No complaints from the 60+ brigade

Always been the case. BOE determine interest rates. America raised their rates sooner than us and inflation is now lower than us. Interest rates around the world are also higher than they were 12/18 months ago.

10 years of historically low rates led people to believe it would always be the case. Easy for me to say some would say but these are just facts.

Hey, im in a similarly fortunate place, but seriously, whys it all on mortgage payers

If you let the better off get away with the pain, then they will continue to drive inflation

Ive always thought higher vat on luxury goods was fairer

But theres prob good reason not to

It’s a policy used the world over to control inflation. When someone comes up with a better solution they’ll be very rich and won’t have to bother about such things.

Imagine the meltdown in the Express and Mail if you tried that

Watch out pal, you'll be being accused of being a socialist commie with radical ideals like that.

Thought I'd better check (i.e ask the missus) how long we've got left on our current deal.

Turns out it's 4 years which will see us nearly done. Thank fuck.

The point about higher interest rates is that it also in theory makes saving rather than spending an attractive idea. The fact savers are not getting anywhere near the full benefit is rather negating that side of things.
Also the BOE rate has a knock on impact to other lending than mortgages so people are less likely to borrow and have as a result less to spend.

Inflation was always going to drop as factors like fuel costs are dropping or at least the impacts are less than 12 months ago. Watching the 2 political parties is quite amusing, when inflation went up the Tories blamed everyone/thing else. Labour blamed the Tories. Now it is dropping the Tories want to take the credit, Labour want to point at everyone/thing else.

Shame that most of the fire officers of a higher rank; the ones signing off decisions made below them in the chain of command, are members of NAFO (National Association of Fire Officers) not FBU (Fire Brigades Union)

It’s like the oil companies, they are allowed to cream it, the people are left to suffer, the system is bent, the big corporations take the cream while the Serfs suffer.

It’s worth looking at other countries interest rates and also the incompetent Shadow Chancellor. She could be running the countries economy soon. She isn’t very good. She could of course be just lying.

The context around interest rates is that many EU countries have given more help than we have with fuel caps/subsidies this means inflation is a little bit lower than ours, therefore less need to hike interest rates to control inflation.

You seem to have a bit of a hard on regarding Reeves, not sure what this is based on to be honest, be interesting to know.

Her CV is excellent, certainly better than the current chancellor.

As I said some EU countries capped fuel costs, however it’s not helped the socialist government in recent elections, FWIW I prefer how Spain have dealt with it than our shithouse governments response. To balance opinion our government helped more than Spanish government over covid.
