So you think it's fine a PM arranges a meeting then runs off at the last minute?

You clearly dont know the history of it and resort to your try and be funny comments

To be honest, I know enough to know that we should be giving them back.

But I would be less surprised if I found out the Tories had sold them in exchange for a Greek island exclusively for use by former Tory ministers

I enjoy Spiders funny comments. He's a credit to how this forum should be.

Maybe they should be given back. I doubt many people here or in Greece, Copenhagen, Paris, Munich and other place's they remain give a fuck.

The bubbles cost us a fortune when we were in the EU the lazy bastards. Retiring at 50 and swanning around in the sun?

Just knock the value of this lot off what they owe us.

Apparently the Greek PM had a meeting with Kier Starmer, who has said the Labour Party is up for loaning the marbles back to the Museum of Athens where more marbles are already on show.

Imagine “loaning” them and then imagine some time in the future the British Museum deciding they wanted to recall the loan.

British Museum - You borrowed our Elgin Marbles in 2025, could we have them back please?

Athens Museum - Fuck off they were never yours in the first place!

British Museum - oh, right, I guess you’re right.

I wonder if this will end up in the Tory manifesto at the next General Election.

We can’t promise more funding for the NHS. We can’t promise higher pay for public service, we can’t promise lower taxation or lower inflation but the Elgin Marbles; they’re going nowhere!

Give me that fucking voting slip and pencil.

If this current lot promise anything it is pretty fair to assume the opposite Stelios would be delighted.

It was the euro zone that paid that. Our only tiny contribution was via the IMF, so nothing to do with the EU.

Johnson was in discussion with the Greek government about this and there was almost a close arrangement.

Anyway, must have been 2 years ago now but I went to the opening of a Greek history exhibition at the Science Museum - still got a deft little UK/Greece flag pin badge. The Greek PM spoke there about how its still an ongoing discussion - has been for years, about a loan situation on a long term basis. The BM (and to be far many other UK museums) has been making changes like this for years  regarding the return/loaning system.of items plundered, but the Parthanon stones have fixed their place in the British head so its more difficult.

It's more telling that he didn't even meet with the PM To progress the arrangement, especially with Obsourne being head of the board at the BM

I think it'll probably happen in my lifetime. And I'm very much on the side of it probably should.

Anyway, seen 'em so they can have 'em back.

I haven't seen them but I say give them back. If I fancy seeing them it would probably be cheaper to fly to Athens than get an Avanti train to London.

😄Yeah, no doubt at all.

However, for balance - you could argue that Lord Elgin saved them from destruction, or that at the BM they have a truly international home.

One of the only reasons the g'vt own them is because Elgin had to pay for his divorce I believe, or that might be apocryphal - I can't recall and I can't be arsed looking it up.

If Britain give Greece back the marbles, how do we know they won't just be eaten by hungry, hungry hippocrates?
