Trouble with Corbyn he was too honest with regards to what he intended to do if elected... he made a big point that he wanted party manifestos to be legally binding... he lost out to the opposite Quote

There will be lots of factors, but politicians have been bemoaning our lack of productivity for a good while. At the same time many an industry has been happy to use cheap, low skilled imported labour to get round investing in productivity. The Migration Advisory Committee produced a report in 2018 recommending the scrapping of the cap on certain groups. A good article here as to why. https://www.kingsleynapley.co.uk/insights/blogs/immigration-law-blog/scrap-the-cap-why-its-time-for-the-tier-2-immigration-cap-to-go It was adopted later. Folk can debate ad nauseum about the pros and cons of such an approach but it doesn't seem to have achieved its ambitions. And this report was also before brexit. We'll soon see what the intentions are with regards to improving productivity. Quote

And shamefully - he kept his gob shut on it instead of reflecting the views if his party. Had he stood on a pro EU ticket - I think there's a (small) chance Labour might have been able to form a government of some sort and we'd still find ourselves in the EU. Massive dereliction of duty and about the time when I lost respect for him as a politician. Quote

Sadly, as a nation, we're far less productive in comparison to France and Germany, which are both fairly "similar" with regards to GDP, our productivity needs to improve, but it won't. I'll admit I don't understand how they actually work our productivity, across a nation, but generally we're always behind the likes of Germany and the US, but ahead of the likes of Japan (which always surprises me) Quote
Ani Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 IMO the best money we could 'invest' now to get a good return in the coming years would be to get HMRC a system that is fit for purpose. Rather than running separate systems for PAYE and self cert for instance. Dealing with them is a nightmare and £bns must just leak out of the system every year. I am in year 3 of a disputed over payment, every call is an hour waiting for phone to be answered. All been caused by a serious of fuck ups at their end so I have underpaid/been over refunded. I have asked nearly 2 years for a breakdown of the amounts so I can confirm the amount , still waiting. Quote
