I missed this the other day in PMQs. Very funny from Starmer to be fair - even if it was scripted for him. Even Lee Anderson was chuckling away. Which made him seem a little more human. Good stuff all round! 😁

When will people realise that immigration is absolutely vital to our countries future?

We have an aging population all on the take, a welfare system out of control all on the take and there's not enough kids being born to bridge the gap.

We need workers. Good quality EU workers, high and low income.

Too many low income ones, and you'll never get home grown people to start doing those jobs.

Becomes a continuous cycle.

Care system for example: too long it's been underpaid, undervalued etc.

It wants elevating to something akin to a nurse, and under the same umbrella.

There are stats to show what wage a person needs to earn before they become a net contributor to the economy, and it's a touch higher than the average wage iirc.

A low skilled, low wage person, maybe with dependents (born abroad or here) effectively becomes a net drain on overstretched resources.

Industry has become addicted to cheaper labour too, which has in part reduced investment in upgrading plant etc to help improve productivity, which is low.

Trades need respecting more, and so many careers seem to require graduates, when in fact basic characteristics like empathy, humanity, and a natural flair should be valued and provide an alternative route in.

Of course we need a degree of inward migration- some will go the other way- but too much forces up housing costs etc, which then means people aren't having as many children, or start later.

It's all laid out in studies and analyses that can readily be found.

Not to say that small boat crossings aren't something to try and stop. But I was watching a programme about immigration the other day - and the number coming over on boats is absolutely tiny compared to the number coming over legally. Somewhere between 1 and 3%

The numbers coming over legally have dropped from their peak post Brexit when we opened up far too widely to the rest of the world. But credit where credit is due - that's largely down to tightening up on the visa rules that Sunak implemented.

So basically we could stop all the boats tomorrow and it would make very little difference to the overall numbers.

Was an eye opener to me as given the profile small boat crossings get.

Chatting to colleagues from Germany and the US recently. It's the same, anti-immigrant mentality but birth rates dropping, noone to do the low-paid jobs like health and social care that people don't want to do. Right wing leaning parties whipping up traditionally non-voting, working class folk that they're taking their jobs. It's the same all over

Big generalisations here of course but that was the sentiment from them, with the appreciation that there are also genuine concerns around illegal boat crossings, migrant hotel housing and asylum seeker application processing. But these and good things can exist at the same time, despite many thinking immigration as a binary issue

Fuck all to do with that difference my friend.

It is who gets in. WIthout going back too far, the Iranian twats currently in the process of being prosecuted used that method of entry (at least some of them did). No doubt that other terrorists, criminals etc. have used the same method.

The unacceptable risk is so obvious - as it should have been when Angela Merkel threw open Germanys borders. The mad cunt.

One in, one out. What is urgently needed.

We actually need more than one in for every one out, that's the point

We need much more than that.

We need proper economic migrants to plug the gap, more not less.

Either that or stick another Covid in the mix every other year and wipe out all the pensioners.

Go on then, Twist my arm and I'll go to 3 in for every 2 out.

Yeah I'm with you on this.

I just think the general public thinks small boats are the reason immigration is so high.

You are probably correct. They have one vote like everyone else. Probably why Labour are currently pandering to the notion. A numbers game to try to entice enough away to thwart Reform.

I think you're right. Trying to steal the small boats ground from Reform.

To be honest I think they're barking up the wrong tree. Most of the Reform lot over here have now positioned Labour as some sort of enemy figure. So I think those votes have gone and even if they brought small boat crossings down by half - they'd still be vilified.

Oi, WTF have we done wrong?😠

If another Covid came along and wiped out 50% of the pensioners, we’d be the richest nation on earth.

Especially more rural areas such as Wales and Scotland.

Paid in for all those years and then stopped. Idle twats.

Yep. Earned, paid in and now spending and keeping the economy going. Everyone can do it if they are lucky enough to last the pace.👍

Interesting fact.

‘Dubbed the ‘grey pound’, this is a market that is worth £6tn globally and £320bn in the UK, accounting for more than half of UK consumer spending.’

edit. And still paying tax.
