‘Dubbed the ‘grey pound’, this is a market that is worth £6tn globally and £320bn in the UK, accounting for more than half of UK consumer spending.’

edit. And still paying tax.

Annual UK consumer spending is closer to £1.7T isn't it, not just c£600B

It's still a significant chunk though

Yep. I don’t think it should be reinstated fully as I’ve said previously. A means to give it to those that need it most should and could be found.

"Those that need it most" were still getting it anyway.

Will SK go the full U-turn?

Eventually.

You clearly missed the bit where they are suggesting/condoning the murder of British MP's?

Presumably you were this blase about Jo Cox were you?

Angry gets nowhere close. I hope the horrible cunt gets sent down.

The Counter Terrorism Police can figure that one out. It's not my job. But if he is then so be it. Presumably you want him sent down for the same reason that Lucy Connelly was sent down? Inciting violence?

Looks like the winter fuel payment will be reinstated for many. Nice u turn by Sir Kier. Hope it doesn’t upset many on here. 👍

There's nothing wrong with a U-turn, it's not a negative.
Sometimes things don't work out and you have to change tack.

Previous governments have been too stubborn to right their wrongs.

Starmer has admitted it was a mistake. That’s what good leaders do, it happens.

Given the good he’s done inside a year, I think he gets that as his mulligan.

Yep. Promoting violence, displaying support for proscribed terrorists, showing support for vicious terrorism (other than Islamist)  even in selecting the band name.

The foulest dungeon available please.

Morally maybe. If the means testing's associated costs are higher than the savings, is it worth it?

I honestly think they can determine the lowest paid fairly easily. No system would be perfect but they could include many more than the current system. My MIL contacted HMRC. last year when she knew she would be liable to tax for the first time. Don’t worry Mrs. H they said, we know exactly how much you earn, the tax will be taken out of your (small) private pension. I guess she’s on about £13.500 a year. I suggested any pensioner earning less than 20K. Anyone on self assessment, use last years figures.

Starmer has reacted to the local election results and the opinion polls and is trying to do something to improve his popularity. He’s hasn’t done anything yet by the way. We’ll see what changes he/they make in the upcoming spending plans.

If only all the systems talked to each other.

People say use earnings but the tax office collect earnings at end of the tax year. So in December this year when it is paid you do not know what someone is earning.

The self assessment side of the tax office does not ‘speak’ to the PAYE bit so you have 2 tax records.

The Govt fucked up with the fuel allowance as they used an easy measure rather than a fair measure. In your MIL instance they will have issued a tax code to the pension provider so they knock the tax off. I get charged 40% on everything I take out and then have to reclaim the tax every year.

The tax system is too complicated and the systems can not cope. Simplyfing the system and streamlining the system would save £ms in admin and reduce the tax shortfall but it is a massive job with £ms of upfront cost that Govt seem scared to commit to.

There won’t be a perfect system. I know you don’t claim state pension yet but for the majority that do, they will be like me. A state pension and private. My private is taxed based on my combined income. I also do a self assessment and pay tax on anything above what they already know.
Basic Pareto principles would cover the majority. Again, no perfect system but something better than the current and we all agree, the previous.

It’s not screeching. It’s just one of many polls that has convinced him to change course. They have now said that Reform are the real opposition. Again because of polls and the local election results. Remember, only 33% of voters voted for them. Polls show that only 23% now support them. 3/4 of the country don’t think they are doing a good job. You do. That’s ok.👍

Yes, so you pension provider is issued with a tax code and take tax of what they give you. Assume you get that monthly ? My scheme is a draw down scheme, so I take lump sums once or twice a year. But your annual tax free allowance is ‘earned’ monthly. So last month I drew down £11k , which along with my small other pension covers my annual allowance. So I in theory owe £0 tax, but as I have only ‘ ‘earned’ 2 months of tax allowance I get charged tax. I then have to go on HMRC site and submit a form that takes 6-8 weeks to process and get the money back. This applies to every single person who draws down from Pension rather than buying an annuity for a regular income. I could wait till next year when they catch up for the current tax year, but my missus wants a new en suite bathroom.

I think the Govt went with a basic analysis of this so the vast majority are not affected or now rightly excluded but they have also swept a significant number of people like both our MILs who are way off rich but have now lost the allowance.

What we need is a government full of Julies running the country. They might not know which country but I’m sure we’ll be fine.

Reform stand for division. Here is another example. The classic mo is spread fear, exaggerate with more lies to fuel hatred of minorities. Farage is just the acceptable face but underneath are some clearly racist elements that rely on this division to break up communities.
