Old Labour Clubs.

Most, if not all have been closed down in my area, was quite surprised to enter one of my old haunts in Astley on a 80s do and finding the place full of fit women. I can't wait for the Tamla Motown do next week.

Hopefully Labour will be closed down one day. Still trying to fight imaginary wars which belong in the last century.

Ha ha, talking to bloke last night who used to go in that club, dressed like a member of Showaddywaddy back in the day, he was clad out pretty normal yesterday though.

Good Knee's reet. Used to see minibuses full of em coming down Tonge Moor Road from places like Colne and Tottington.

Being uneducated at the time I always associated them with greasers due to their musical tastes. Only later did I learn that they were the predecessors of Mods.

At the time however, us TM skinheads couldn't resist having a go at em.

It's disgusting that thing

Nice inside though, not ate there yet

Wingates Labour club very, very,  early 70s - old stalwart died so they had his dead body sitting in a wheelbarrow by the entrance the next night so old cocks could pay their respects as they went in. Caused a bit of a kerfuffle.

I remember reading about that in the 'Looking Back' section of the BEN...

It was during the first week of November 1973 iirc.

It certainly did cause a kerfuffle but the incident did allow the old lad to posthumously raise £18.73 in change - paid for the regulars a round in his honour...

Breightmet labour club was a great place in its time, was gutted when they knocked it down

Aye, Saw some good turns at Breightmet Labour Club, including Bernard Manning, possibly twice. One of the locals had a go at heckling Manning, which didn't go well for him.

I can think of 4 cons clubs round here but I’ve never known a single labour club.

Wonder why that is?

Coz Labour is only fer't Moslems.

I've only ever known two Liberal Clubs. One is still thriving (although not sure if still a political club) at Victory Street; The Victory Reform Club. The other was in Recreation Street in Harwood and all it had was a couple of snooker tables. No bar, no staff, nothing! You joined and they gave you a key to the front door. It pretty much supplied a great place to hide while playing truant from school. That building is now a house.

Cons Clubs I'm more familiar with having once or twice played snooker and pool at Bradshaw Conny Club but Labour clubs, I've been to Tonge Moor (shut) and Breightmet (shut).

Tong moor and bradshaw conservative clubs

Tonge ward labour club and if its not the same place North ward something or other

Think thats my lot

I used to go in Farnworth. and Kearsley Labour club many moons ago along with Farnworth Vets Club.

Are they both still open?

Astley Bridge Conny Club and a club (don’t think it was political) near The Morris Dancers.

Always thought it odd that BL2 still has three Conny clubs within spitting distance from each other along Bury Road... in a seat that has been Labour since we left Burnden. Not a Labour club in sight (to my knowledge) - Tonge Ward shut down ages ago.

There's another

Is Central Cons Club still open? I walked past a few mornings ago and it looked an absolute shit hole...

but then it always did.

Was Wood St classed as a Labour Club?

Atherton had a Labour Club, Liberal Club, Consevative Club and the Soldiers and Sailors Club, only the Conservative Club left now, the Labour  Club is a Holts house and the Liberal Club is being turned into flats
