BD please this isn’t the time for logical thinking

What a time to be alive. So people who would most probably class themselves as Libertarians are defending the position that a non-elected employed advisor, with no specific scientific knowledge (despite what his blogs say - and I'd certainly give them a read, or there is a good audio listen about them) cannot be questioned about participation within a government select group to tackle a international crisis. Nevermind the fact that not one person here knows what  role he is playing in these meetings, there seems a distinct contradiction between small state and market-led freedom and entrusting significant government policy to a non-elected official.

The whataboutry that some people seem to be tying themselves in knots about, is a failure to understand why people across the political spectrum feel that this is an overstepping of remit, never mind protocol. Removing any divisiveness that Cummings himself incumbers, its is right that people should be allowed to question what his specific role is, and why he is there.

Ultimately though, this has got nothing to do with Dominic Cumming's inclusion into this group. The fact that a simple request for transparency is lunged upon as an attempt by metro-centric elites, who are secretly revelling in the death-toll, to turn this into crisis into a political debate about the government is worrying.

Its been startling to see that any musing, thought an/or questions about the government are seized upon by a faction (on just here but its being played out across the media as well) of a divide we saw all too clearly being played out over Brexit - loyal nativism against disloyal international expansionists. 'Debating' over a political issue is certainly one thing, but bringing the same narrative to the table at this point seems to display an ideological inflexibility which is at best unhelpful, but at the very worst it leaves a country open to less than rigorous accountability for those leading it, which is dangerous.

Forget political divides - any person who is unaccountable to the British public and has a significant role in our lives should be questioned in an open and transparent manner. There have always been kingmakers, that we should let them off the hook without due diligence to what they do is a failing of us, the public, and a success for those who wish to keep us away from having more say in how our lives managed.

I think this is where some common sense has to be applied in the absence of a strict lockdown.

I've done similar. Been shopping for my nan, dropped it off at her back door. She's taken it in and made me a brew, which I sat outside her back door and drank, whilst she sat at her dining table chatting to me. We never got close to each other and no contact was made.

We weren't sat together having a picnic, but we did technically break the rules. But for her mental health/happiness, shouldn't that be OK?

Lucky bastard. It’s mainly potholes with very little tarmac round my way.

That's my opinion on it..

End of the day, if we are looking after people, part of that is making sure they are OK.. My grans in hospital having had a stroke, if we had been able to see her, we might have seen the early warning signs.

aye, it all seems fair enough

I've not done it, as much as I would like to and I'm not really arsed about James Cracknell

but if I did, I wouldn't post a picture of it for all my 37k followers to see though, just in case like, asking for "trouble" and all that

I don't think it's anywhere near as widespread as people think, in the main I think most are sticking to the rules - the press don't really help, as they try and make things sound worse than they are, and also love taking photographs at certain angles and from certain positions to make things look a lot busier than they are. I'm sure we could so better, but I do think most people are sticking to it

I am pretty sure one of the science types said in a briefing that they modelled behaviour and overall we have exceeded expectations (in a good way) sure this is part of reason nightingale hospitals have not been needed.
Basically the Dickhead factor referred to as ‘D’ is lower than expected.

It's bizarre if you completely misunderstand and just make up what I said.

I didn't complain about Cummings attending SAGE meetings. I said near the opposite - if someones opinion is that he's pulling the strings anyway (which seems to be the position of most people unhappy at his presence at SAGE) then him turning up at meetings isn't really the issue.

Secondly, science is a thing, scientists are thing. 'The Science' - a unified, definitive position on the best route to take at any point - isn't a thing. Yet people keep talking as if on any issue the government just gives a quick call to 'The Science' and it tells them what to do.

The idea that everyone in SAGE meetings, much less every scientist on planet earth, agrees with one particular strategy is obviously and clearly bollocks. Otherwise every country would be doing the same thing.

I agree with that. Often in the businesses I work for you have all the experts in a room but they do not a majority agreement on best next steps so rather than spend hours arguing there is a referral process to the ‘big bosses’ (steering committee). That make the judgement call. Having a government bod in the meeting to do this makes sense. I think the fact of who it is is probably the bigger issue.

BTW the reason membership of SAGE is not published is to stop external Influencers trying to persuade/bribe people. Pretty sure if you were that arsed you could find out who was there.
